Was going to go with a section of round tubing for my hot rod frame (boxed and z'd model A frame). The rectangular tubing I'm using is 3x2x1/8 thick for the rear kickup,.....I was thinking of sticking with 1/8" thickness for the tubing that will hold the rear srping,....lets say 2" ID with a 1/8" wall?? Can't seem to find anyone in my area that stocks a good array of DOM tubing, so my question now becomes,...is it that pertinent to use DOM over schedul 40 round tubing,...??? I know inherintly DOM is technically stronger and better tubing, however, since the rectangular stock is NOT DOM,...is it needed?? Interested in the opinions of those who have built/modified frames,....guys with lots of opinions and no experience need not respond.... Thanks in advance,... J.
1 1/2" x 2 1/2" x .120 wall rectangular tubing is used by quite a few aftermarket frame manufacturers for the rearmost crossmember. Makes for an easy place to mount a transverse spring. Round tubing looks cool, but is a little more work. I like to use square and rectangular wherever I can. I think the SoCal 32 frame uses 2" round DOM, probably .120 wall, but you could do a little research on the Internet, find the SoCal catalog and see what it has to say. I'm using the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" x .120 wall rect tubing on the back of my 31 on 32 rails roadster project.
Yeah I'm not going to use pipe,....tubing only,...schedule 40,...(do I have my lines crossed, sched. 40 isn't pipe is it???...tubing right!??.....damn its late,..I'm tired,...been up since 4:15AM!!,....now ya got me thinking!!??) J.
Yeah Sched is pipe. wasn't trying to be a***** with my comment but my experience with using sched although it can be used, is usually it is weaker and fails at all the wrong times. Granted the applications I see it used in myself is in the 4wd community, but I apply the concept to any vehicle build. HREW is not that expensive, and if they allow HREW cages in drag cars and they hold up I figure it is good enough to trust my life to in other apps. In fact part of the cage on my rockbuggy is HREW and it has seen some pretty nasty hits to it without failure.
oh no, don't worry bout your comment, no i didn't think that,.....thanks for the consideration though,...most don't think twice. yeah, I was a little out of it when I was first posting this,....I was eating dinner later and thought, did I post about schedule 40 pipe?? Hmm,.... Got four things going on in the back of my head,....!! oops! Thanks for the info. J.
Yeah i normally hit Hoover for 90% of what I need,....they have almost no selection of "round" tubing though,....very THIN stuff,...."some" DOM, but when you only need 4 ft. of 2" round, you want to avoid spending big bucks and have them order in a full length of it for you....rather not,.....there's a place I found and had forgotten about untill now, that supposedly regularly stocks lots of DOM tubing,.....never dealt with them, but I'm going to giv. Thanks guys J.
