I picked up very solid 47 Ford coupe a couple weeks ago. Been sitting inside since 69. The flathead is stuck solid naturally. So I want to do a sbc swap keeping the original trans and rearend. From what I have read so far, I need a pilot bushing spacer, 49-51 mercury pressure plate and the bellhousing adapter. My question is, are all the adapters the same, or do some years of transmissions different? Just don't want to buy the wrong stuff then find out that it won't fit.
This may save you some looking, and some $$$ if you have a local clutch rebuilder.: Ft Wayne clutch is expensive and gets $90 core charge. Stock Chevy flywheel drilled for Borg and Beck. Speedway pilot bushing. Borg and Beck #1310 pressure plate. Stock Ford clutch disc. Early Chevy nose style 3 bolt starter. Adapters are the same for SBC/Early Ford.
You will also need the proper flywheel for the Chevy engine. I can't remember if it's 153 tooth or 168 tooth. Speedway should have that. Call them and speak to one of their tech people. Ready to use with the pressure plate mentioned. I have one. It's already drilled for the conversion. You also need the front mount adapter. Simple to install with no cutting or welding. I think there are a couple of those listed here in the "Parts for sale" section. This is a pretty easy conversion. The hardest part is the exhaust system. Also, if converting to 12 volts you will need to replace all light bulbs and use a 12 volt coil with ballast resistor. These old Ford gauges work on 12 volts just fine, as is, except the temperature gauge. The easy way around that is to install a universal gauge and sender w/bracket.
What year SBC? Starter can bolt to adaptor or block. Also if using Hurst cradle you need the front bolt holes in the block.
All of the SBC to early Ford adapters I've seen required the 168 tooth flywheel, as that was all that existed at the time the adapters were designed.
Thanks for the good info Guys. I knew of most of the things needed to get the engine into the car, but was a little fuzzy on what all I need to hook it up to the early trans
283 with an old speed gems adapter. There’s usually several in the hamb classified for sale. it’s crazy how similar the sbc and flatty oil pans were. Had steering box issues with the rams horn manifolds so I found some 55/56 Chevy manifolds 51 merc chassis.
