Cant get the pin out on the reverse shift lever boss, its supposed to tap out from the bottom. I knew it was going to be a problem because the pin was already ******ed, and it didnt let me down. Can I drill it out and put a roll pin in there, or do I need to find another tail housing while i'm hunting around for another 3rd gear and nose cone? Thanks, Mike
The trans designer used the lowest cost pin type that would "survive". So I wouldn't try using a lighter duty pin. Maybe Squirrel would have some sources or ideas?
When you buy a small parts kit, it comes with a new pin. I would get a good pin punch and anchor the housing and drive it out from the bottom.
it's been several years since I messed with one, but isn't that a tapered pin? If you need a few odd parts please ask, I have a parts trans in the shed. not much is good on it, but you never know.
Thanks Squirrel, Yes it is supposed to be a tapered pin, I suspect someone at some point put the pin in from the bottom and then ******ed it up trying to get it out later. It wont budge and i'm pretty sure the tailhousing will be trashed by the time I get the reverse lever out. If you do have a useable tailhousing, that would be great, I know I also need to replace a chipped 3rd gear and the nose cone/ input bearing retainer, so if you have any of those please give me a shout back. Mike
I doubt I have any of that stuff good, on the trans I have the tailhousing is missing one end of the boss where the mount goes, there is no front bearing retainer , and third gear is worn out. If you happen to be putting the trans in something that doesn't use the rear mount, then the tailhousing might work. If you want it let me know, it'll be free. Maybe you could get a little bit of tig welding done on the one you have after you get the pin out then drill the holes again the right size?
I just went through this problem on 2 Muncies. Ended up heating the pin bore as evenly as I could with a torch, and it came out relatively easily that way.
How about a little heat? The aluminum should expand more/faster than the steel pin. Also, a little heat, then stick a candle against it. I've seen miracles with the wax "wick" it's way into the space between the pieces involved
I'll give the heat a try, I have a tig, but havent fooled with welding aluminum yet, now may be the time.
