I am thinking about using a V8 60 in an upcoming project. I know nothing about these engines. I am looking for any info I can get. Things like rebuild kits, speed equipment and what years are the best/ worse to use. Any information would be much appreciated.
I would not use a V8 60 in anything but an early midget project or a super light roadster. They have less power than a standard flathead... the speed equipemt is very expensive and getting rare. Rebuild kits... pretty standard and easy to get. So anyways.. send me the 60 and go find a later flathead.... you ll be happy you did
Search.... There is enough stuff currently on the market to build decent power, but as stated before, you need to put one in a super light car to make it worth doing Power wise they are short, but no worse on paper than an MG
As Sloppy said, you will be disappointed with the power from a 135 cu in V8-60. Heads and manifolds are a lot rarer and more expensive than the ones for the 85 flathead. If you are dead set on using one, you want a late '39 or '40 iron side block.
I have searched. I have read a lot about these little engines. I am trying to get as much info as I can to make the right choice.
Your long lost Uncle 3wLarry just happens to have a complete iron side V860 and ******...and it's for sale.
The early 1937 V860's were made with welded on tin sides...you don't want them...you want the later cast iron sided ones...they're stronger.
I saw yours for sale. My friend has three of them and he said he will sell me a complete one. Yours is tempting, but shipping would kill me!!!!! Mike
I can tell you from experience that a V8 60 isn't a good engine for anything except a very light car, my avatar is a 28 coupe I built in the early 90's with a V8 60. The engine has no torque and doesn't really make any power until about 2400 rpm, I have a 30 pickup with a warmed over A motor and it would run circles around the 60 powered car up to 60 or so, everything for them is costly. If you are going to build one use the cast iron sided motor, I had three extra motors and some speed parts and sold them to a midget racer. Speedway Motors still sells speed parts for the V 8 60, but I think you will be dissapointed in the preformance.
Apparently the French used the V8 60 for years. They also utilized an OHV conversion on a 'Simca'. I beleive the heads still available in South America. Uber cool mini Ardun. www.comyoutube Ford Flathead V8 60 Hemi.
If you keep it to a light T roadster, say around 1600lbs or less it'll probably go good Also keep in mind that with the small stroke they have they are capable of pulling more R's safely than an 85
Thanks for all the responses. The car I am planning this engine for doesn't need a lot of horse power. I think the only drawback for me might be the cost.
I just received a flyer from Andersen Design Speed Equipment in Salem OR. They are advertising 2 versions of cylinder heads, dual carb manifold and a steel flywheel for the V8 60 engine. Their phone number is (503) 393-7575. I have never bought their goods but the fellow was very knowledgeable and the product is there. thanks Dale
Ive heard good about that shop, they make a tripower too, which even though it is more carb, it can be ran progressive and be more streetable. I havent seen their stuff up close, but i think "stromberg97's" may have, i think it was him that i got intouch with them
Here is a Anderson intake 2x2 , excellent casting, runners are great..I believe for a mild built V8 60 2x2 is enough..This one has 81s.. His heads are also excellent quality.. Duane.
know a guy out of NorCal running a V860 in a short belly tank he built to run at Bonneville. planning on building one with a blower next.
Should any of you boys want an original Eddie Meyer dual for v8-60 contact me (PM). I ran across one today and can p*** on the information to get it or possibly pick it up for you.
jeez... you want to try my shipping costs lol... Currently looking for a little flathead v8 for a project for next year.. preferably not an early tin sider.
