So I bought these tail lights off of ebay and am now wondering what and or how to put sockets in them. I have noticed some have a "U" shaped bracket riveted on to hold the sockets. But am wondering what any of you have to offer as far as advice. 1157 sockets? Thanks guys.

Thanks for the idea and pointing me in the right direction. Maybe this will work.

What do you mean by late model plastic? Sorry I don't know.

go to the parts store and ask for a replacement tail light socket...but bring the lights with you so you can see how it fits. Don't be surprised if they have to order some, they usually only stock one or two of each

I am interested in this thread also as I plan on using the same taillights on my coupe. Thanks for the suggestions. What ever socket I use I want to use an led type bulb/light with it. I am subscribed.

  8. I use one of these. The brand is "Narva" i don't know if its Australian only or not.. but i take the guts out of this and stuff it into the old light. Usually the lights already have a socket but sometimes i take that out and just replace it with new stuff. You won't need the black plastic part.. unless you wanna use it i guess but i never have.

Take the earth wire and screw / rivet it to the housing somewhere, and then you just take your positive wires out the back of the housing.

Since yours doesn't have a circle slot, i would probably make a new backing plate and make the hole just a fly***** under the diameter of the sleeve of the globe holder (thats what they refer to them as) and just tap it into the new plate.

If you want LED, and you also need housings and lamps, then you might want to look at purchasing a complete****embly, rather than old housings and new LED lamps.
Depending on the year, there are a lot of companies building complete LED units for various makes and models. Some of them look identical until you light 'em up and see the LED lamps.
I went United Pacific on the rear of my old Austin for a '40-'41 Willys.

What are those taillamps? That method of socket installation is very modern. From the rear they look something an early 50s Hudson or ??

I have to confess that I never knew anything about them until I saw a Hamb members build and he was using them. I don't remember who it was, but I love these tail lights.

  18. Perhaps the "fly*****" saying is Australian, i don't know.. but i hear it a lot from other tradies haha. Its kinda like the saying "woop woop". It doesn't mean anywhere in particular, but us Aussies always know where it is!
