Questions about this 327 I just bought..Expert motor guys needed...

    George,
    I'm not mad and I really don't like to argue, so we'll agree to disagree. With 2 sides to the discussion, there's more than enough information for anyone that wants to find out for sure to do some research. The link in my post above is one of them.

    Anyway, I bought the valve covers I have used in 1972 for my Corvette. They were a couple of years old and I really don't think anyone was making repos in 1970. I will say that there were probably 10 times more Corvette finned aluminum valve covers sold over the counter at the dealership than ever came on new cars.

    Little more info for 1967 Corvettes:

    "L79 350 hp
    The valve covers are finned cast aluminum with the word "CORVETTE" cast into the cover. Most cars have a casting flaw line through the letter "o" in Corvette. Some early production cars may not have the casting flaw line." -

    I'm not mad either. But I'm not going to change my mind I worked on to many corvettes back in the day. I think those covers came from the dealer. The parts at the dealer may not be made by the same company that made them for the new cars, if the cars are not being made any more. Also some covers were added to the base engine that had steel covers. So we will just not agree. This is my last post on these. It's ok not to agree.

    why are we arguing over these? I like them and that's all that matters. The heads never came on a car or vette from the factory. Done over. Next....... back to topic. Should I go with the performer rpm or regular performer? What about the air gap rpm?

    Guess I never followed up on this thread. The motor still isn't in the truck. Soon! But I did make some changes.
    A quick recap on the motor from my first post. This is the sales info the guy I bought the 327 from had. It's not originally from a 63' Vette but it's a 62'-63' SJ 327.



    Rebuilt 63 Corvette 327 Engine
    This engine came out of a 1963 Corvette Split Window I recently bought. I’m putting a stoker motor in the ’63 so this is for sale. Block was bored to .060” over with new TRW pop up pistons with molly rings, double roller riming chain turns a new Crane Fireball cam with advertised duration of 286°. Block also has new cam bearings and freeze plugs. Crank was turned to .020”-.020” with new Clevite rod and main bearings – new high volume oil pump with hypo intermediate shaft. Heads are angle plug Fuely Double hump with stainless 2.02” intakes and 1.60” exvalves. Heads are street ported (reworked bowls and gasket matched). Heads have screw in studs with CompCam guide plates with Hypo 3/8” pushrods. Heads just redone with new guide bushings, perfect circle seals and perfect 3 angle valve job with LTI springs. Valve covers are genuine Corvette highly polished. Intake is Offenhauser 360° equa-flow manifold that is gasket matched to heads. Included is a junk QuadraJet carb that’s been sitting in a box for 25 years. I would recommend a new Edlebrock (manifold is for AFB, QuadraJet type carbs – Hollys don’t fit). The factory Hypo Rams Horn exhaust manifolds with 2-1/2 outlets are also available for extra money; flywheel also available. Engine built by El Mirage 200 MPH and Bonneville 200 MPH Club member with 40 years of race engine building experience.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->



    So that is pretty much what I know about the motor.
    Heads are from 70'-71'. Service Only. In other words, they never came factory on a car or truck. They were dealer, over the counter heads. Angle Plugs. 2.02/1.60
    I picked up a new intake to replace the Offy that came on the motor. I know what it is, can you tell me??? It was a craigslist score. I know what it's worth and got it for almost nothing. It has the oil spout I wanted so I'm happy.

    I also picked up a new set of Stainless Steel block hugger headers that clear the angle plugs so that is squared away. I went with one of the ebay 60K billet HEI distributors. No carb yet but planned on buying a new Edelbrock 600-650 with electric choke once I get close to actually needing it.

    The 46' Harvester is now sitting on Jaguar XJ6 front suspension. The rear is from a 95' Ford Explorer. An 8.8 with disc brakes, Trac-Loc, and 3.73 gears. Also has the 31 spline axles. I have the rear suspension from the Jag as well but will add that down the road when I can rebuild it and change the 2.82 gears in it.

    So all that said, My issue with this little 327 remains the same. Will it work with pump gas? I've got so many opinions on what the CR is gonna be!!!
    I may still want to change the cam as well. If it's gonna be worth it, I will. There is a machine shop/engine builder close by. I'm gonna pull the heads and load the motor and heads up to run over to the shop. See if they can check it out and give me some insight on if it's gonna be OK with pump gas or not.
    I was also told that the "pop-ups", "domes" on the pistons can be milled down to decrease the CR. That way I don't need to swap pistons. Is this a good option if needed?
