OK I have a good friend of mine restoring a 62 postal jeep, he found it in a field and trying to sort out some problems. The steering was terrible with a lot of gear play. So I told him pull the gear and bring it to me and he did. I haven't seen the jeep but anyway it's got a 525 right hand box in it and it's totally wore out. Wants to see about rebuilding it. So my question is does anyone know if the Pittman shaft gear and the gear block on the steering wheel shaft are the same as a left hand drive? If so I could find a good used l.h. drive gear and swap the guts over to the R.H case. This would allow him to bolt his gear right back on and go... Thanks for any info guys and leads. He loves this old jeep and really wants to get it drivable again... ..
There have to be parts sources for those things simply because so many were built and rebuilt and rebuilt again. I've seen some that rural mail carriers bought and converted to 4 wheel drive to use on their mail routes some just as their winter mail rig. Not cheap but they do sell rebuilt right hand steering boxes 1987 Jeep PostalJeepRightHandetc Manual Steering Gear Box Gemmer -Right Hand Drive -Manual Steering - Gemmer 24JC04 82-70309-r I did find a listing for a service and parts manual for postal jeeps US POSTAL JEEP Service & Parts Manuals - 295pgs for Dj-5d Dj5 Fj3 Fj6 Fleet Van Service Tuning and Repair - Etsy
When I restored my old Jeep I found a Jeep parts dealer in Eastern NE that had everything I needed. He stocked both left hand drive parts but had right hand drive parts just for Postal Jeeps.
looks like the RHD box is a mirror image of the LHD box. so the threads on the input shaft, and in the ball nut, will be reversed.
Didn't think about that @squirrel but I bet your exactly right... So that shoots down the swapping guts idea ! ....
I'm no expert but if you switch the left hand gears over to the right hand box wouldn't it steer backwards?
