Has annyone used the rack and pinion steering on a model A. How did it work? Do you like it? Were there problems? thanks hurst

  2. Depends what sort of a set up you wish to install. The following relates to a beam axle and not an IFS.

A frame mounted standard double ended rack is a non-starter . Inherent bump steer will result.

Mounting the rack to the axle will eliminate the bump steeer but will demand a slip joint on the column somewhere to compensate for rise and fall in the suspension.

There are some onesided racks available that effectively replace the steering box in the usual cross steer arrangement as fitted on the 35-48 Fords.

I just can't wrap my head around how you can effectively use one system (rack and pinion) which is totally incompatible with another system (live axle). I'm sure it can be done, I just don't think it should be done.

Saw the Uni-Steer, it replaces a box, set up on a 31 A 2 weeks ago at a local A&W the guy said it worked great. I had a rack in my A also with a Mustang 11 set up and fenders to cover it all up, loved it.
