I have a feeling i might be in touch with you once i start on mine Mine's the same as whats under your A.. Thanks for all the info. Tony
You can change to a newer 31 spline locker. Check to see if there are any Circle Track auctions coming up in your area. QC parts seem to go fairly cheap at the ones in my area. Last spring I picked up an Iron Detroit Locker for $100. You could also have a local shop cut the full floater ends off your exsting tube and weld on bearing housings available from most rear end suppliers (Strange, Mark Williams, Ch***is Engineering, Chris Alston, ETC...). http://www.markwilliams.com/esell/prodinfo.asp?prodid=1720 That would give you an easier way to mount drums. You could probably also find someone to weld a mounting flange on the existing tubes and run the 5x5 hubs and stay full float.
Great info here. I bought a Franklin center and it came with a fixed spool, no bells, tubes, brakes. Just the center section. I was told later that these QCs were difficult to convert to street use. It sure seems from what i'm reading here that just ain't true. From what i was told, it is a champ car unit, it has 11 studs to hold the bells on each side and i think the quick change shaft is 10 spline. I need to convert the spool to a posi. get the right bells, tubes, axles and brakes. Seems a little daunting. Is there a basic truck rearend that a person can start with that has most of the needed parts, minus the bells? Mike
What quick change rears are best to use for drag racing? It'd be going behind a somewhat-built 364 nailhead with a 4 speed, and probably a 4-link and cheater slicks in a Model A. -Jason
The cheapest is also the strongest! Get a rear from an obsolete modified or sprint. These are the 10" ring gear modern QC rears (if you consider 'modern' early 60's to present!) The hard part seems to be the brakes and axle flanges. If you are ok with modern disks and wide 5 wheels, all you need is a Speedway catalog. The drums and 12 spline axles are hard to find. The vintage Halibrand type rears that use original Ford bells and/or tubes are big money, and weaker.
Check this site out http://www.hotrodworks.com/ lots of info their. They where great guys to deal with. When my Quick Change went out going thru the Smokey Mt, foot hill on my to GainsVille Ga. and then got stranded out side NasVille, Tn. on my back to Chicago. All three upper brearing went out cause of gear lash setting or wear (that Quick Change unit was over 35 years old). They supplied me with a complete new copy of a Halibrand with a quick turn around time. Hope this helps!!!
hi there chris here from south australia im looking for a adapter kit for open tail shaft for a 6 spline QC diff that im about to install in my 39 ford. i have a 239 flathead with supra 5 speed gearbox attached. has anyone got any connections, advice or information, especially in australia on how to get my hands on one kit. thanks for any help regards chris
I like the wide 5's as you can see from my 27. It is not for everyone especially if you like the shiny stuff. I have a Franklin QC installed I am happy with the performance and happy with the looks.
