    Is your lower shaft 6 or 10 spline? I'm looking for one for a very early frankland, back before they were casting their own and still using the 46-48 banjos. Screenshot_20230503_191508_Facebook.jpg 20230517_203006.jpg 20230524_205401.jpg Screenshot_20230503_191718_Facebook.jpg

  3. Tyler, glad to see you here. Your dad and I went to Dakota together and wrestled for Coach Sterner together. You are doing a killer job with that coupe, anything I can help with I will. Trent

    I take it you are looking for a 10 spline for open driveline. I have an iron Frankland in a roadster, with an Atkinson rear cover, that is 6 spline. Have you compared the length you need to a Halibrand ?

    The “unknown quickchange” is a different size than an early Frankland. But my brother has an original early Frankland that we could measure if you need it. It’s 6 spline.

    When we are making our new copies of the early Frankland we use a Halibrand 201 lower shaft since they are easier to find. Basically just requires moving the front bearing farther forward. Could possibly be done on an old housing with a spacer?

    @GearheadsQCE
    Such a great thread.
    Bruce, you mentioned wanting to finish a book on this topic. I realize it’s been a long while, is this something you still wish to do (or maybe have already)? I’d be first in line for a good comprehensive book on quick changes.

    My problem is that I keep adding stuff to the list. I have so much info that I can't decide what to leave out.
    Not sure if a printed book is the way to go. Wish I knew more about online publishing or whatever it might be called. Not trying to get rich, but would like to at least make $.25/hour for the effort.:D

    Anyone have suggestions?

  9. Wonder how Vern did his little books ? Yours might be bigger to include all - but what if you did break it down per the main used types ?

    You might be right, print is a dying media. Still, maybe something like what Mac VanPelt has done for the 3sp toploader. Those are ring bound, and so perhaps printed as they are ordered. Web media is great, but difficult to lay open on the workbench :)

    You might want to message Jimmy B, as he publishes his books on an ‘as ordered’ basis. Shipping is also done by the publishing company - I believe it is called “Blurb’

    2022-08-27 Pinion shaft-Left hand threads (2).jpg Can anyone tell me what this is? See RED arrows in pic. Appears to be a spacer. This is the way I found it assembled inside the QC housing. The pinion shaft is from a Halibrand 301 and I cannot find any documentation that indicates this spacer is part of this unit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Just went back and re-read all 14 pages, wow what a ton of info..

    I've got this axle in my 33 Chevy former dirt track coupe. It looks to me like it was kit built, the name on the rear cover is Highland Machine Co, Springfield Mass. Pretty sure it's got the 4.86 rear gear and it came with 21,22,23,24,25 & 27 tooth change gears. Airheart 4 piston calipers on wide 5s. What do I have here? Any lockers available? 20230914_223604.jpg 20230618_091432.jpg 20240722_224954.jpg 349036807_735535081910080_6524608004919750180_n.jpg 20240722_224958.jpg cover.jpg

    Looks like the inner race of the bearing to me. Part of the bearing itself, it won’t come apart from the rollers. The outer race is a special Ford double sided race.

  15. Highland built these rears in house, I am not sure if they ever sold a kit.

    It’s going to be a 12 spline Spool and axles, I am not sure it there was ever a 12 spline locker.

    Your rear is based off the Timken 3/4 ton floater, all full size 10 spline in oval track terms are based on this rear.
    Which means all the bearing races and seals are still available.

    That's a quick change built for a early Timken axle from a Ford truck.

    Thanks! Any idea what years?

    So this is not FoMoCo but an aftermarket built unit? Or a Ford axle that Highland modified? And no spool in this one - totally open. A spool would be fine going vintage drag racing at the Pinetree Jamboree

    Given the Wide-5 hubs, roughly 1936-1939.

    I can't remember if big trucks carried that pattern longer.

    That's some Ford stuff, and some race stuff.

    It is possible that it has an OEM open differential.

  21. It's a Timken with a Highland modification, Frankland made them as well.

    I checked with my dad there were 12 spline lockers, Frankland called their's the "No Spin"

  22. 3/4 ton trucks ran Wide 5 though 41.

    The Timken rears were used in Ford truck at least to the early 1950s. Studebaker used them as well but I do not recall the years.

    @Jason Weir,

    I have at least one 12 spline Detroit Locker, possibly a spool.
    I just threw out at least a dozen 12 spline spools. In 40+ years of building QCs, I have never sold one.
    If you have an open drive unmolested original differential, it can be upgraded to 31 spline.
    You can message me for details.

    I think he needs a spool from a Frankland as opposed to a Halibrand. there is quite a difference in length. I had both. I believe I saved one Halibrand, I'll have to look.

    I believe I have a frankland spool of you want- would need to know the length to double check.
