You may already know, but for everyone, here a few tips on building a whole rear axle housing:

Unless you are replacing a housing that you already know is the exact width you want, don't guess. Get the exact wheels and tires you plan to use, first. Mount them, and properly inflate them. Do not just use the loose tires, and guesstimate. Prop them up perfectly vertically next to both sides of the car. Play with the positioning until you get them exactly where you want them. Then, and only then, carefully measure between the mounting surfaces. That is your wheel-mounting-surface to wheel-mounting-surface axle width.

Build your setup according to that.

Always remember: No two brands of tires are exactly the same width, in the same size. Different people have different ways of defining backspacing or offset, even though there is only one correct way for each. Don't take someone's word for what they did. If they measured wrong, or mis-remember, you pay the price. Fixing an error caused by over-trust could be expensive.

Marking this thread. I have a Winters Champ with 40 bells with big Ford bearing ends,Winters adapters and an aluminum spool with 4:11 gears. I started buying used parts to put this together and called Winters to see what the rest of it would cost to finish it up and got a very disapointing answer. They told me it would be cheaper to buy a whole new rear setup than to finish building what I have. I am thinking how can a posi differential, a couple rear gears and a new aluminum case (The magnesium case I have is good, I just hate constant polishing) cost almost what a whole new rear costs ? Not to mention the new rear has axles, bearings etc. That I was not even asking about. So far I have just gotten frustrated and entertained going back to a 9 inch. I hope to get better news from someone. I am not going to eat the money I put into this thing AND buy a new unit. These things are expensive as it is.

    Kan Kustom,
I'm a dealer for Winters and I see both sides of this. Winters is a manufacturer and assembles their products. They do not have a "Kustom Shop." What you are wanting to do is labor intensive and requires fabricating special pieces to mate it all together. When you build something up from parts it gets expensive. I remember a study done in the 1960s that showed the cost of a new car assembled from parts as opposed to buying a whole car. The cost was 10-20 times greater.
Fortunately for you, I'm the "Kustom Shop" you need. I have built a Winters exactly as you describe and several others similarly. Here is what I had to do to make a Halibrand/Winters combination using the side plates I believe you have.
    Begins @ post # 314.

If you are interested send me a conversation and we can figure something out for you. It will be less than the cost of a new rear end.
