Looking ahead at an install of a Winters V8 quick change into my 34 Ive been trying to get my head around what will be required. One of the questions I have is the installation of the spring hangers for the reversed eye model A spring I think I would use. I need to fit a new crossmember so that was one of the drivers to go this way. It seems I could use a Model A rear crossmember or a flat one. If the latter is that the 40 style setup I read about? Roadster Supply have these for what I assume is spring behind. Are there other options people have used? Thanks.
Typically you'd use a 28/9 rear crossmember and spring. You could use 40 bones if its 40 tubes and brakes, 36 if its 36 tubes, etc. I think a 40 crossmember would be too close to the quick change for suspension travel. There must be plenty of info on here about it, try a search
Unless you use an A or T spring, the quickie won’t fit. So, use the A crossmember. Buy the hangers before you weld anything in as they come in different lengths and that will dictate where the crossmember goes.
Yeah, and different drops too. SoCal are different to p&j for example, don't ask me how I know! Not sure about those Roadster Supply ones but they, or something very similar, were available from SoCal (and I think there's some kind of connection there, but could be wrong) but it's anyone's guess what the key dimensions are. If you mean for straightening, several past threads covered it fairly well but basically it involves 4 plugs in the bearing areas and a ground straight bar trying t o slide through all 4 with less that .003 bend. You straighten the housing with point heat and water quench on the high side.
This guy modified his 34 crossmember to use a model A center . Turning the U-bolts upside down [nuts on top] will get you a badly needed couple of inches.
This is a So-Cal frame/crossmember/spring setup. They also put the hangers on the axle so they should be able to tell you what the correct positioning should be.
As always thanks so much everyone. @Rocky read your build thread before posting and appreciate you posting again here. Great solution. Unfortuneatly I dont have the rear cross member as current rear is an OT 70s GM product. You car has always been a favourite of mine. @alchemy, @Happydaze and the other guys that mentioned it, thanks so much. Had not thought about different perches having different drops etc. Great info. @Bert Kollar cheers for the pics. What is that adjustible vertical rod directly the shock? @Pete1 thanks re the straighening advice.
I am also putting a Winters Q/C in my 34, I bought ladder bars and spring mounts from RJ's. He is a vendor here also, His stuff is very nice quality, good communication and overall a good guy to deal with Here is a picture of what I got
Rocky's first photo of what looks to be a an 'A' center section only, added to a 32-34 crossmember, looks good but not sure it provides sufficient room for spring travel.
What's going on here. It looks like your shocks are fully compressed and your spring is too wide for the distance between shackle mounts.
i used those same brackets to hang a winters quick change under my roadster, i know they are advertised as being forged with no need for bracing but i added their forged braces also, there was a post here on the hamb about their tendency to flex without the brace.
The forged hangers shown above are not the stock distance from axle center to spring center. I've done dozens of quick change rears with A springs and A rear cross members using the 35-40 rear spring hangers from P&J's combined with P&J ladder bars. If done correctly you will not need a panard bar. R-Jays brackets and ladder bars are the same as P&J's
Silent Rick: Good looking installation. I have never seen the gussets offered, is that something new? I think the spring hangers are of excellent quality but my concern has been because they place the rear cross member closer to the rear end than the standard length hangers will the edge of the A cross member get to close to the rear end? Also if you study the deeper drop on the hanger compared to the P&J style hanger could the rear end travel be reduced?
they're a socal speed shop product along with the spring hanger and matching ladder bar mount, all similar designed forgings. i looked for them on their site last night, saw the other two items but not the braces. i think i had to ask for them. as for not being the same dimension as a stock hanger, i centered my tire in the wheelwell opening and put the model A crossmember where it needed to be
I've done a number of quick change & 9 inch rears with 1/4 elliptical springs and ladder bars. First quickchange was the NSRA 30/31 highboy pickup giveaway car in 2003. That car is now in Germany. My first 1/4 elliptical spring rear was in a 32 highboy roadster in 1985. The car still has the same rear setup with over 150,000 miles and lives in Oregon. My most recent chassis done this way was the Dale Grau 32 lakester, the Green Hornet. For that car I made my own rear spring setup with ladder bars. There's a picture of the rear in the giveaway car and a roadster with 1/4 elliptic's on my website cornhuskerrodandcustom.net
