I simply buy batteries with bolt on side terminals, and add a battery disconnect switch. So when I park it for the winter I turn off the battery, and connect my trickle charger to the battery side of the switch, and a ground. Makes it easy to trickle charge, and no need to remove the battery.
All mine are trunk mounted also.

I have these on my vehicles and it would be quicker to loosen the nut and lift whole connector off, than to do what you propose.
As for my post, I don’t if they are made of bicycle parts.
I just did a google search and thought that they looked the simplest, if you have the room.

The advantage of removing the negative post, on a negative ground vehicle, is that if your wrench touches any piece of the car while loosening the cable there is no big spark like would happen if loosening the positive terminal.

And watch out for those generic battery disconnects. I put one on a car and discovered that it wasn't br*** after all, rather br*** plated zinc. Pretty shady.

  7. I noticed another gentleman posted a picture of the 175 Amp "Marine" or "NASCAR" type connector. I can tell you they work great & will last forever. I have them on all 3 of my trucks & both of my transporting trailers. You buy 2 halves (both identical), they each come with 2 lugs (generally #2 gauge)
solder or crimp on the lugs. On the battery side a short piece of each cable with one halve attached. The vehicle side, bolt to frame, crossmember, etc then just unplug battery side & remove battery with connector attached.

Summit Racing & Napa both sell them.

    God Bless & Happy Thanksgiving!

I don't care either, was just asking. I've got a car in the garage with a bicycle brake cable in place of a broken throttle cable right now.

    Those are Anderson connectors.

They can be had up to 4/0, I believe, and from numerous suppliers.

  10. I never knew what the actual name was, they use them in NASCAR & so that is what we called them!:) These are 175 Amp & the size is 2/0 what I use for battery cables, especially since I run the positive up to the dual batteries on the truck.

    God bless

0E337710-5119-487C-8410-668A1DD1D5FA.jpeg I used an old nicad battery box which came with a quarter turn disconnect! Check eBay or aircraft surplus parts! Might have to modify inside the box for fit, box is vented and the lid is sealed!

This is what is on my trailer for my winch, Same as what Squirrel, Billy Bandit and Bills Auto Works showed. As Bill said you can get them in different gauge and amp ratings. They aren't expense at under 20 bucks. I probably wouldn't have used one except the winch came with one. The caps are in the tool box and I didn't have the key on me. Now I need to carry it to the garage where I can keep it charged up. I can also raise the winch up so I can get the battery in the holder right.

Some of this stuff is way too fancy, or won't do what the OP wants to do or is far too expensive.

Those Anderson connectors come in various sizes. I use them all the time on winches and battery cables and jumper cables. But I only use the large set size, rated for 350 amp. Smaller sizes come on some winches from the factory. I also used them a lot at the Fire Dept, for winches that were positioned at different points on a vehicle and to power various 12 volt powered equipment.
I bought mine through the Borg-Warner brand, I didn’t remember them being called “ Anderson” . The 350 amp size will take a very large cable.

Yup, manufactured by Anderson Power Products.

I helped with some of their larger designs a long time ago.

  18. I did a quick Google search & these are the ones I am using. They are 175 Amp & you can get them with either #0, 2 or 4 size lugs

Do you have a picture of the 350 Amp ones? I would love to see how big they are & what size cable you would use for them. I did not see any in my quick search.

Yes, Bill I have some out in the shop, I will get some pics of them. For me and my big hands they feel just right! They will take 2/0 cable, if I remember correctly! It’s been some years since I installed any. I am just the King of Overkill! I honed my skills dealing with a hundred firemen, most of which could tear up a ball bearing with a rubber hammer! That’s why I like the 350 amp connector , that way you can get all your batteries has to offer, or most anyway. I even looked for some bigger amp rated connections, but couldn’t find any.
I bought most of mine from O’REILLYS, in the Bord-Warner line. You will have to find a store that will let you look at the books ! You go in ad ask for a “ Borg-Warner 350 amp Cable connector “ you will get asked” What does it go on? “.

Edit : A quick search in Amazon under “ 350 amp cable connectors” came up with some great pics and prices. You can get a pair for around $30. That’s less that I paid for them 20 years ago.

  20. Thank you Bones!

There is some serious difference in amperage rating claims going on with these that leave me scratching my head!
The one I posted a link for earlier is rated @ 175 amp & uses a 1/0 wire size lug. The one I am linking now after Bones told me to look on Amazon is rated @350 Amp yet only uses a 2/0 wire gauge lug....Very strange, it should be the other way around since the 1/0 caries more amperage than the 2/0.
No matter whichever you chose they are plenty for any automotive needs.

Bill, we’ve got a problem... 2/0 is a lot bigger than 1/0. After 0 there are no more numbers and it’s just Xs 0, and the bigger the number in front of 0 , the larger the wire. Totally opposite of the wire size on the other side of 0. It’s kinda confusing, to say the least. The 350 amp connectors are about twice the size of the 175 amp connectors, physically. I only use the 350 amp ones for transferring total battery power.
As a former winch dealer I have installed tons of winches and I always cut off the little factory connectors and replace with the 350 amp ones.
I always used 2/0 welding lead wire to power the winches from the battery. I have mounted portable winches in four locations on vehicles using these items.

One other neat thing if you put one of these connectors out on your bumper, buy an extra set and put on the end of your jumper cables. It could save a battery explosion and nobody can borrow your cables! You will always have them! Win Win! Lol

  22. Thank you again Bones!

I had it backwards, as I was working on the wrong side of the "Zero" Yes you are right about the jumper cables, long ago I drove a tow truck locally & it had one in the grill opening so we didn't have to open the hood to give a customer a jump start. Heck I was still in high school then, had to be '79 or '80

Sorry to 5window for hijacking the thread!;)
