I'm putting a new floor shifter in my 59 chevy pickup. It has a 235 with a 3-speed manual, stupid question, but which way does it shift? I know the rearward lever is 1st/reverse and the front lever is 2nd/3rd, but which direction are they supposed to go in? eg. 3rd rotate forward/2nd rotate backwards. I've attached a picture to exolain a little better what I'm asking, basically I want to know what the shift pattern is for a 3 speed manual chevy tranny. Thanks, Clint
Standard 3 speed on the floor pattern is as follows: Reverse = forward and to the left First = rearward and to the left Second = forward and to the right Third = rearward and to the right
Thanks guys, I'm not sure that I made my question clear, the pattern you described is the one taht I want to achieve, I was wondering which gear is selected on the tranny itself, eg. when shifting above the shaft ( front lever shifted forward is 3rd, front lever shifted backwards is 2nd)
it's shown in second gear. the front arm pushes forward to engage 3rd. the rear arm goes forward to 1st, rearward for reverse. just the opposit if the arms are in the downward position. jerry
In high school I had a Camaro with a 3 speed for a while. Got the local mechanic to help me swap the clutch after hours for a couple 6 packs of Oly. Had to go get a couple more 6 packs before we were through. Somehow we managed to get 2nd and 3rd switched! Had lots of fun letting my unsuspecting friends drive that car! Found out you could go from first to second with a quick flip of the wrist instead of foreward/over/foreward, then straight foreward to third so we left it that way!
