So I've had this old artillery wheel laying around for a while and I also have an old tractor seat. I'm thinking I might make myself a little caster wheeled chair to use in the garage when I need to be working at a low height... and because it looks fun and like something a mechanic or body guy might have made for himself back in the day. I'm thinking I'll make a round base the wheel would sit on and that 4 or 5 casters might attach to and then build a pedestal for the seat to sit up on through the lug holes or center hole. A little blasting and a fun paint job and viola' I think the wheel is a GM version but I could be wrong. It seems like a 16" tire version (it's like 17" and change around the outside of the lip) and the bolt pattern looks like 5 on 4-1/4". My quandry is that I don't want to ruin a wheel someone might actually need... although I have an idea that won't hurt the wheel at all. Here's kinda' where I got the idea...
that wheel may be desirable/valuable....so ,i wouldn't weld on the wheel , just make it all bolt on so you don't ruin it
I'll sell you the one I have then you would have 2 !! Hell mine is still connected to the carrier that was on the trunk my old 36 chevy.
hmmm... the wheels in my head are now turning faster... i do have a really rusty old '31 5-W coupe body...? for this one we'll need an axle...
Use the artillary wheel on the outside of your shop and wind your garden hose around it...but a cheapie seat and put the tractor seat on it...that way you don't ruin the wheel since you can just lag it to the shop/garage/house
hey decker, i had the same idea found a nice solid tractor seat on the range in Montana was thinking about making a frame & putting it on casters now i'll check out how an old junk wheel would work with casters, you might want to direct that wheel you have to one of the Hamb guys
That doesn't look like the small bolt pattern 17" artillery that a 36 Chevy would have. What's the bolt pattern on it? I might have a match for it. Artilleries may not be big money parts, but they are desirable, and it'd be a shame to waste a good one that someone may want.
Weld it up! That way when folks visit they can be shocked at what you did....................it is only an old wheel dude.
I dunno... why do people spend $10K to make a flathead make 200hp or $4K for a pair of E&J's... or..... ? Maybe I'll find a different wheel to use... maybe one of those old dirty looking magnesium aluminum one's out in back... on the pile.... Trust me... I'm not about to ruin it... but it is just a rusty old wheel.
