When looking at the gear sets that you can buy, several combinations have the same gear count, such as 21/21, 21/24,21/27, 21/29. Are all 21 count gears the same size? Is the 21 in a 21/24 gear set the same 21 in a 21/29 set? I need the voice of experience. Thanks.

Only the 21/21 gears are the same..All the rest will not enterchage anywheres as the gear pitch is different..The 21/29 has the smallest pitch which makes the 21 gear smaller in diameter allowing the 29 gear to fit..

Each set is designed to accomplish the stated ratio. NEVER mix and match gears from one set to another even if the tooth count is the same. The diameters will be different thus causing interference or too much clearance. Get the gears from two sets with the same tooth count and compare the diameters and it will become apparent.

Actually there are some gear sets that come with 3 gears like set #30 and #31 that use a 20 and either a 40 or 41 tooth gear. And some other. But close togeather.
