All I'm going to say is that this weekend, a HAMBer - I'll leave him to show himself - was running consistent 15.7 second quarters with 84mph terminals with a flathead four-banger. It was in a steel '31 roadster in full street trim (though the 'screen was removed) on bias-ply tyres and pump gas.

I just want to know if anyone is going faster with a flattie-four.

I dont know if he has set any times yet, but there is a guy just north of Medford OR near the old US99 who has a real tuff built model A old style 30 roadster as well which from what I have seen and how much money he has chucked at it, I suspect it would be very respectable also.

But to who ever this Hamber was congratulations on such a quick run, well done.

Hey John :) Hope you're well. The Tudor is coming along and should be on the road within the next couple of weeks.
The tub ran a best of 17.3 @ 77 yesterday, which I am very pleased with. Gonna try and dip into the 16's whilst still running just the single 97.

Got some snaps but they're at home. Post them later.

After seeing the said HAMBer running in the low 16's at NorthWeald I am not surprised he got into the 15's at Shakey.

Question is..... when will he crack the 14's....

    Well done Sir!

That's an incredible time for a banger on bias plys. I'm thinking it's the equivalent to a mid 10 in a small block Camaro. Congrats to whoever accomplished it.

    Wow!!
Are there any other numbers, like 60-foot, 1/8", etc.??

It would be intertesting to analyze banger performance against OHV performance, low end vs high end parts of the scale...
with stockers, typically the banger is faster than the flathead V8 at low end of each gear, V8 faster at top...

It's your trumpet to blow, I was just interested in hearing if anyone has gone quicker.

Secret Squirrel! That takes me back...

  10. I would like to see these figures if available. My car, with the Riley 2 port, went 84 but with a slower ET. Curious to see where the difference was.

  11. This could be fun!

I'll be back with my print out...

  12. Heres my timing slip from my fastest run.

Comparing the timing slips back to back it seems that I was fractionally quicker in both time and mph at least up to the 1/8 mile point.

The 2-port could being picking up speed right at the top end whether my flathead is leveling off.
This makes sense as you would expect the 2-port to be a better breather than the flathead.

Would aerodynamics be coming into play at the top end or 80mph?
The single man modified should cut through the air alot better than the roadster?

    Pete:

That motor sounds great for any engine let alone a flathead 4. Damn, that is cool!

  19. What gear ratio were you using? We were running 4 11's. This was the second time behind the wheel for this driver. Aerodynamics be damned, your car is quicker.I'm guessing that my car quite a bit lighter. You WIN!!!

  20. Well done little fella. Still waiting for my box of hand-me-downs from your never-ending quest...

You been tapping Tony Cardy up for his "speed secrets"? Like "Always go for a decent poo beforehand"...

Aw...don't tell him that! We'll never hear the last of it

  22. That's what Trans Ams were running in the 80s. Pretty bad ass for a 80year old four cyl.

  23. Just to keep the story straight, my car is actually a 1 and 1/2 man car, 2 man if your are really good friends. It has been narrowed 8". It is a good car if you have any half-assed friends you want to take for a ride.

Great performance, and from what I remember, quite a rocky road to get there.
    Well done, Clark.

  25. I was going to ask the same thing.

I clocked off my two best times with 3.60's!

I tried 3.90 which produced the same times as the 3.60.

I settled for the 3.60 in the end as it feels nicer on a run and stops almost all the wheel spin on the line.

May try a 3.78, but can't bring myself to buy a set of quickchange gears that are the same size and do nothing!

I tried the 4.11 but found it ran out of puff at half track.

  26. Damn, that's a fast banger! Thanks for the info Artiki.:D

  27. Way cool ! What transmission are you running in that puppy ?
