Yeah, I said it. The sound is dated and tired and so, well fuck it. The sound sucks. I did an O/T rod for a friend and he had me ditch those for Magnaflows. Gotta say, cruising they sound nice. Not harsh, not obtrusive, just nice. On start up they bark to let ya know it's hot, and at WFO they mean business. They will definately be installed on the GTO when I get to that, and no it ain't no LSwhatthefuckever. It's a proper 389 with 2 too many carbs. I think they're just right for a MK IV BBC, but let's all remember that compression really dictates the bark. If the 454 in the topic is the typical 1975 Suburban transplant with 8.5:1 it may not 'hit' like you're looking for. Had one in a Chevelle and it only got loud when the panic button shot the happy gas, and I had NASCAR dumps and long tubes on that one. The dumps had glasspack inserts. Anyways, my opinion for less than 2 cents. And this just in from the FWIW dept, I'd run a balance tube in it (H-pipe).

Put a cross over pipe between the two exhaust pipes, that will quiet it down.

Built a thumping 455 Pontiac street motor, 6x heads, 9:5 compression, 490/520 lift 238 intake/ 245 exhaust duration at .50 custom ground to my specs, stock intake with worked over quadrajet, just headers and 2 1/2 exhaust. Idled at 900 with a wicked exhaust note, put a cross over pipe on it and it sounded almost stock. The owner almost had me remove it because he liked the thump better.

Never found out how fast, never could get it to hook, it would beat his brothers 1970 450hp 454 vette though, more than once :)
