I couldn't help it....the kits with the right parts were just sitting there taunting me. Cory, your concept is awesome.

What month is that issue? I looked for it after I had a chance to flip through a friends issue. Then I looked for it on the news stand but never found it.

The issue came out in about June of July, which would make it a Sept or October issue I think. It's like a 3 page mini-article.

Kevin had Thom revisit the "truckster" in the March 08 (wow) issue of R & C. It has an exploded view aproach to these concepts. And he does the grill treatment a bit different using a 71 Ford cab and its grill and headlights rather than some thing like a 32 shell. Quite cool. I also thought of going Plowboy and use the rear end of a clapped out late 50s sedan rather than use a shorty bed.

This rocks. I've got 4 '54 cabs around here. I NEED to do something like this at some point!

Are you going to start a build up thread or keep us posted on this one? That was my favorite concept too. I would be very interested in seeing some one build it!

I'll probably continue to post progress on this thread.....a fellow Hamber is sending me the hood "eyebrow" pieces (thanks Jon), so once I get those, progress will move at a faster pace than it has......:D Those pieces are crucial.

Subscriber cover was a black `32 3-window and Tudor hiboy. Newsstand was two `32s at Bonneville. The illustration in at the top right of both.

Thanks for the info. Now I can at least get an idea of what to look for. I can't believe I've found all of them from 2005 to present EXCEPT August!

Unless I've missed something, the issue you should be looking for is 2007.

  23. These things may not be "Traditional Hot Rods" but they are very reminiscent of 60s show rods, I think the model Fidgeter is doing would make a very cool project. I wish I didn't have three other projects to finish. Damned short attention span!

i finaly started on that damn 54 ford cab tonight. :D i got it in the garage the other night and took some pics that i cut up to get the proportions i wanted. i took 8" out of it width wise and plan to section it about 6.5 or 7". i got it narrowed and clamped together tonight. we will see what the next few days bring as far as progress goes. i'm just gonna get the body together and sell it. i don't need another full on project and i could use the coin for other stuff (seeing as how i'm laid off now for a while). i might shorten and narrow up a 51 Chevy long bed box that i have out back and put it together with the 54 Ford cab. hell, i even have a 50 chevy truck frame with disc brakes on the stock I-beam axle. that might make a good low buck start for this thing.

a little more progress today. i got the two halves welded together (just tacked down the back side for now) and layed out the lines for the section. i also cut out the firewall. i did this in a strategic way. there is a method to my madness. you'll see later on in the build ;).
i got the back of the cab sectioned 6.5" and tacked together at each end (door posts). still have to tack and weld it along the entire back side. that'll be a time consuming process there.
the top of the back cab wall still has to be trimmed down. i haven't decided how far yet. after i get the doors sectioned and tacked on i'll decide on that. i'm going to tack weld the doors on since i did not get any hinges or latches wit this cab. whoever ends up finishing this thing can decide weather to weld the doors shut or locate hinges and make the doors swing. i would personaly hinge the doors but i have no intentions of finishing this one. i just want to build the body and then send it on to a good home.

a little. no rush on this thing. it is just my "tinker with it when i don't feel like working on the other stuff" project. i have no intentions of "finishing" it. just do the body and sell it to someone who want to finish it up.

i built the firewall a couple weeks ago at the same time i built the doors for my tube bender die storage cabinet. used GMgrunts Pullmax to do the beads and my buddy Dan's louver press to do the louvers in the doors.
i've also started welding the driver door skin to the body. i cut the guts out of it and will do some bracing in there later so it will stand up to people putting thier weight on it as they climb in.

Have you any updates on the progress of this build? I am been throwing ideas around ever since I read that article in R & C last year. Had too many projects at that time but I have since sold off a couple. Looking to do something with a 40 Ford truck cab that keeps calling my name.

Would love to see how far you have gone as you are definitely doing it the right way reducing the width and sectioning the body. People tend to not go that route and the cab ends up looking like a baby Huey with a shirt tha just doesn't cover the body.

    Hope things are going well,
