When I was in the Army, and was stationed in Lawton Oklahoma, in the summer of 74, I went to see them at a foot ball stadium in OKC, (festival seating), which meant no seating, and it was a not a well tended to turf, so hard on your ass.

We were rookies at such events as to what to bring, so we had no big straw hats to protect or heads and faces from the blistering sun, we had no blanket or any folding chairs to sit on, and we had no sunscreen to protect our legs and feet as we were wearing shorts and flip flops.

And we didn't even think of bringing a bottle of water!

Major sunburns, and total discomfort, BUT, the music was great, and I actually got to see the beach boys perform live, it was worth the pain of an Oklahoma sunburn!

Brian Wilson's hair style, at least as far as I was concerned, had a big influence on me as a kid in the 60's. But I opted to not use any greasy kid stuff to keep it in place!

Yesterday I put Pet Sounds on for a reflective listen. People today don't understand how groundbreaking that album was. Still a great listen!

  5. I think a lot of people do
John Milner was as wrong about The Beach Boys as he was about the grill placement on his 32.

  6. I blasted loud and proud Beach Boys all day in the shop today getting the coupe ready for next week end. GREAT music, and made me feel good after a shitty week at work. Thank you Brian, R.I.P.

Great thread, We saw the Beach Boys perform live in 1981. One thing I remember is that we had main floor seats and we couldn't see a thing sitting down - everyone there was standing up, ON the chairs so we did too! That, and the mix of ages in the audience: high school kids diggin' it right along with gray hair folks that were a lot older than we were at the time. I still have the show program and the ticket stubs.
    :)
Some years back I ran across this album. The cover is in really rough shape. The booklet that originally came with it is long gone. The vinyl is a little scratchy but playable. As you'd guess from the album title; it contains just the instrumental backing tracks from each of the songs. What strikes me is that while those tracks are recognizable as their respective songs, there's virtually no melody. To me that shows how much the Beach Boys' songs were built on their very own, unique blend of voices and harmonies. Without that, they wouldn't be The Beach Boys.

And for any of you who might be into streaming, check out this weekend's edition of "Hot Rod Radio USA" with Wings Kalahan. He spotlights a lot of Beach Boys songs, including some rarely-heard stuff. Crank it up!

    From Hemmings this morning:

The Beach Boys Frontman Loved Classic Cars

Brian Wilson, the legendary frontman of the Beach Boys, was known for his love of cars, particularly classic American models. He owned and drove a variety of vehicles, including his first car, a 1957 Chevrolet Impala, a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Club Sedan, a 1979 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, a Rolls Royce Phantom, a 1990 Corvette ZR1 and a Ferrari 488 GTB, and his most iconic car, a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette C2 Sting Ray.

You can't really appreciate the talent of Brian Wilson with the Beach Boys until you try to perform their tracks/songs with the talents of a average garage band. I have been a drummer for about 40 years and have been in several really good groups but never was in with a group of performers that could match the vocals, instrumentals, and sprit of the Beach Boys. Last time I saw them was at a small concert in PA and they show up in a bus but they were great.
God speed to you, Brian and thank you.

"Brian Wilson" and "Sly Stone" are now loose molecules in the Universe, having a great conversation about each others style of great music!
They both made it to the ripe old age of 82 !

When my wife was working at Mass Mutual [late 90's] for a big anniversary [150th I think] celebration the company rented the whole 6 flags amusement park on a Tues nite in Agawam, MA. and everything was free for employees and there family, Featured Band was The Beachboys! Boy did they sound good. Mike Love, Jardean and the drummer was I think John Stamos. Extremely good performance..

77-98 I was lucky enough to see The Beach Boys 8 times. My favorite band!

  15. The Beach Boys were the first band I really got in to. Great cars, music, girls, surfing and the whole early California scene was a dream for a young man growing up in the rural South. Great music that will live forever.

One of the few full tapings of the lads when they were quite young, Brian still touring and on bass. They play a hell of a set here. Unfortunately for everyone, James Brown was there and had one of the most magical sets of all time, lol. It's said the Rolling Stones saw James from the side of the stage and said we're toast.... There's no following that....

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Brian. Today would have been his birthday, appropriately born on the first day of Summer.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice The Beach Boys ‧ 1966

Wouldn't it be nice if we were older?
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong?

You know it's gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together
Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through?

Happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
    Wouldn't it be nice?

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray
It might come true (run, run with you)
Baby, then there wouldn't be a single thing we couldn't do
We could be married (we could be married)
And then we'd be happy (and then we'd be happy)
    Oh, wouldn't it be nice?

You know it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
    But let's talk about it
    Wouldn't it be nice?

    Good night, my baby
    Sleep tight, my baby
    Good night, my baby
    Sleep tight, my baby

    Hello,

How in the world can someone just sit in a couch or desk or even a beach chair looking out at the ocean and write a set of lyrics that would hit home to a million folks across the USA? Or even the world? It takes a genius mind to think in those terms.

For most of us, at the time it was a trying lifestyle to see how one fits into the scheme of things. I was finally home from my foray into the college life in Northern California. It opened up my mind a little more to absorb a new environment and living in a different place with new rules, etc.

But, coming home and enrolling in the local 4 year college I should have gone to in the first place, was like “Old Home Week.” Some of my old friends were now on a new path and we all liked seeing each other, but our interests had changed. Since I was closer to the ocean as when I started to surf, it got to be a surf session before school and the road trips vacations to round out the “old ways.”

    Jnaki

The theme of the Beach Boys was very catching and hit all of the notes to make folks feel as if they were riding around in hot rods and had surfboards on top. Rarely did we coastal folks see actual hot rods with surfboards going down the highway to the top surf spots. But, those album covers and magazine shots made it look as if… (at least one Wilson Brother actually surfed…) it was a daily occurrence. NOT!!!

It was a time that we grew up and liked that style of music until the whole rock music scene starting pounding into our heads… YRMV

    Opie:
    "The birdcage is empty."
    His dad Sheriff Taylor:
"Yes, but the trees sure are full."

"This world has lost so many good people."
"Yes, but heaven sure is full."
