McCulloch supercharged, Hilborn-injected, Ardun -- does it get any cooler?!!

"SAN BERNARDINO - Charles W. Scott, often referred to as "Scotty,' enjoyed an illustrious career as owner of Scotty's Muffler and provided his expertise to several members of the professional race car community. Scott, a San Bernardino resident, died Sunday at Redlands Community Hospital. The cause of death was not known. He was 91.

He and his wife opened Scotty's Muffler in 1946. "It's always been a center of the hot-rod community. He did a lot of dual jobs, tuneups and was the largest muffler shop in California for a while,' said his son Bill Scott.

On Dec. 19, 1953, The Scotty's Muffler belly tank D/Roadster out of San Bernardino, featuring an Ardun-equipped Mercury for power, ran only the sport's fourth 140-mph time with a 140.32 at Santa Ana.

Throughout his career, he was heavily involved with drag racing. He served on the pit crew at the Indianapolis 500 for his son Bill's race car. Bill set the all-time track speed record of 257 mph with one of Scott's cars at the Texas Mile in Goliad, Texas, in 2004. See video here>>

Scott enjoyed racing so much that he continued racing as he got older. At age 71, he drove the Bonneville car that can reach 213 mph in 1985 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. He had to stop driving in 1990 because of weakening eyesight.

He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Route 66 for all the work he did in the racing industry. more>> The local San Bernardino paper did this nice biographical story on Scotty in conjunction with this award.

He was also inducted into the Street Rodders Hall of Fame. Next month, he will be posthumously awarded the Golden Age Award from the National Hot Rod ***ociation at the California Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield." more>>

    RIP Scotty.

My condolances to the Scott family.

I used to go there when I lived in S.B., from '91-'99. Saw a ton of *****in cars there over the years.

Hey Goober, ya got any more pics of his car(s)?

  3. Here's a few more pics.
Scotty's on the right, I believe.

Was Scotty's Muffler franchised? There used to be a burgundy Studebaker pickup running around Anchorage with Scotty's Muggler on the side.

OOPS! I mean muffler not muggler.

  8. Don't think Scotty's was franchised. But do know there are several other muffler shops around the country with the fairly common name Scotty in them.

  9. By the way, I believe Scotty's son to be the famous Top Gas driver Billy "The Kid" Scott.

Here's a shot of Billy "The Kid" Scott from 1965 at Lions in the Scotty's Muffler car.

At the 1966 Hot Rod Magazine Championship Drag Race at Riverside Raceway, Tom "The ****oose" McEwen driving Lou Baney's Brand Motors Ford City Spl. was reported to have "knocked off 17-year-old future Top Gas great Billy Scott aboard the Scotty's Muffler entry in round one with a shut-off 7.51/175.43"

"Dec. 2, 1967 - Orange County International Raceway, then just five months old, hosted a Top Gas and Fuel Altered show. Billy Scott ran the best speed ever for a gas dragster when he won the show with a 7.75/207.84 best in John Peters' twin Chevy engined "Freight Train."

Billy Scott later successfully drove the Adams & Rasmussen Chrysler-powered Top Gas car.

    Godspeed, Mr.Charles W. Scott.

How appropiate for Scotty to p*** away during speedweek. In one article, he talks of a time when he saw some guys going out to Muroc, roped his Mom into driving their touring out to the lakes and he became consumate gearhead!;) He truly was a great pioneer!

I remember the freight train. I think I might have had a model of it. Great picture of him leaving the line hard. Thanks

Had some exhaust work done there when I lived in the area '84-'88...Besides having nice stuff of his own, the shop did great work on customer stuff. I got exactly what I asked for, fair price, great fit & finish.

    RIP Scotty...

    Scotch~!
