I am sorry to report that today we lost a great friend. and very talented hot rodder, artist and writer. Don Pennington "old striper" here on the H.A.M.B. passed away this morning after a long struggle with multiple health problems. Don was multi-talented and always there when you needed him. When I took on the restoration of our #219 Stude Bonneville car he insisted on doing all of the graphics, lettering and striping work for free just to be involved with the project. He has written and co-written along with Albert Drake several books on hot rods, race cars and hot rod history. He has done so much over the years that there's no way I can mention all of it here. He was a great friend for over 35 years, I will miss him, as will all that had the good fortune to have known him. God speed my old friend, Gary Vail.
Yep, He was my friend for over 50 years loved the guy. fun to be around and so talented.. He will be missed by alot of us.. Bob Huffman
I've been thinkin' how much I'd like to paint a salt car the last few days, and who knows why I looked at this thread. Seems like a kindred spirit, moved on. R.I.P. Don.
Sounds like another person with Passion and talent that will be greatly missed. God speed! Posted using Full box of Crayons on the Kitchen Walls App!
I only knew Don for the past few years but I admired his graphic work and talent. I called him and introduced myself we just talked about graphic design and the decals he had created. His work was very professional. He was very good at what he did and I just wanted him to know how much I admired his work. I believe there will be a special place in haven for someone like Don. Super nice guy and fun to be around while listening to a story or two of his. My dad and I have a few pieces he did for us back in the eighties. Will miss him for sure.
Thanks for posting that up Gary, though it's sad to hear. Enjoyed talking to him whenever I had the chance, great guy.
You couldn't be part of any Auto related hobby in the Portland aria and not come in contact with Don. He was my friend for over 35 years. It was tough watching his health slip away. God Speed my friend. The Wizzard
Sadly another name to add to the ever growing list of names on my."Scroll of Sorrow". Never met him but hopefully maybe in another life. Godspeed Don.
Don and I go back only about ten years or so, but he always greeted me and talked to me as a friend, and always had something neat to show me or talk to me about when I visited. Looks like I won`t be doing that drip rail repair on the `ol 40 Tudor.... I will miss him a great deal--and spare a thought for his best friend Bruce Geisler---After Bruce`s wife passed just over a year ago, they were even more like brothers (think the Odd Couple...) This is a bad day in the Pacific Northwest...
