i'm po'd. found out today that the speed channel is no more. fox sports has taken its place and, according to my cable company, will have "some" auto-oriented programming. google speed channel and you'll see a LOT of people are very unhappy about it. apparently, stacey david's "gearz" will be back in the fall, but that's about all i know. just what we need--more sports coverage!

Oh well. One more good reason for America to get off their asses and do something, like build a hot rod.

Haven't watched Speed Channel in over a year. VELOCITY is the car channel you want to watch. Bob :)

I'll miss it even though it became a NASCAR PR outlet in recent years. What I will REALLY miss is wind tunnel with Dave Despain. Dave is affable, very knowledgeable, honest, and not afraid to bite the hand that fed him once in a while, to say nothing of Robin Miller and Bob Varsha tidbits, plus great interviews. Fox sports in a different version of ESPN as far as I can see. MAV/TV looks promising so far.

Velocity is the station to watch. I think that is where Gearz is going.

I noticed a few days ago that the speed channel was missing but just as well because all they were showing was those B.J. auctions. Boring.

You, and probably the rest of us did not watch that channel much anymore cause it has been off for a couple of weeks now. Every time I turned it on, there were guys either towing trucks out of the snow or putting stereos in Hummers.

Speed, or Speed channel, or Speedvision used to be really good, twenty years ago. Saturday, Thursday Night Thunder, live coverage of Midgets, Sprints, Silver Crowns, World Rallye. The last few years it has gone to what? Monster trucks... the scripted drama laden pseudo car building shows, or All Nascar All The Time with the usual suspect commentators announcing that "Nascar has made the right decision" on what ever lame ass inconsistent or just foolish direction they went. I will miss Despain's show but it had been watered down in recent months when they omitted the call-in email part.

gearz wasn't a bad show , Met stacy in person , and he is as nutty in real life as on the show , but he is real , not a star type drama queen . when TNN was around it was nice , but when it went to speed it went down hill . don't have cable or dish or even a attenna at the house , ( we watch dvds ) so I don't miss tv much anymore as it has gotten real stupid with what I have seen about with reality tv shows .

Why would I give a shit about that?? Watching someone working on, or driving cars is like watching porn when I could be having really good sex

I stopped watching Speed Channel because it seemed like every time I turned it on there was a commercial on!!!!!!!!

I know commercials pay for everything but it just seemed like every three minutes there was another one.

I believe there is another reason Speed Channel is gone and that is for some crazy reason right now all forms of racing and anything to do with cars and trucks is suffering from a lack of interest!!!!!!!!

Many of the either drag racing or hot rod forums I like to look at seem to have the exact same problem right now a general lack of interest.

Where there used to be hundreds of views at any given time now the numbers are way off.

I see car auction shows where cars are selling for a lot less then they did just a few years ago. Is it just the economy and the recession or a lack of interest?

NASCAR sure sees this happening by their attendance numbers and at some tracks they are removing seats!!!!!!!!!! I guess that's one way to appear like the events are selling out!!!!!

Same problem in drag racing exact for the old nostalgia events which seem popular.

How many big performance racing part companies are either gone Out Of Business or are hanging on my their finger nails right now!!! Most have half the employees they had just a short time ago.

It's easy to just blame the economy and the recession but I am not completely sure that's all that's going on here.

On another thread on this forum someone pointed out that young guys do not appear interested in building cars anymore. Something is changing guys.

What your opinion on what's going on?

There was a time when I would have missed it. Other than the rare occasion, nothing there for me in the last several years. A dedicated motorsports channel will probably never happen. Gotta sell soap to survive, and sadly, motorsports can't do it well enough in these times.

some of the projects he built were neat . stuff I wouldn't want to or couldn't spend time on building . also it gave insight and information to other forms in the hobby I don't participate in . like mudding or rock crawling , but give me a idea what I might do for my brothers truck that does do that .

Seems to me, all Speed did was get it's name changed and all those terrible reruns were replaced by sports shows. They seem to have pretty much kept the same programming to cover the NASCAR races, at least for now. Gary

But if they go "premium cable," then I'm done with them and whatever racing they cover at that time. Gary

Jimbo , the economy is in shambles still , the smart people who lived within there means still have the toys and money ( mostly because they know how to build there rides , the others basically were posers ,
the body shop I worked at part time closed its doors after 30 years , because we could not get cars in . the guy who owned it now works out of his garage at home about a car a month , and its guys who we have known for years who keep him busy , the bodyshop it was new people who basically bought there cars because it was cool and wanted to be part of the in crowd . you wouldn't believe the simple repairs I did because a person was so non inclined ( couldn't change a old sealed headlight or turn signal , let alone do a tune up )

as for the nascar bit , Our PD here basically calls it a colllege frat party on steroids , as all it seems to be is one big beer bash with commercials running in a circle , these people now days are not like the old crowd who knew what a carburator was or a boom tube or what weigh jacking is . its all drama queens and a reason to go out and get drunk and stupid in public and is a status symbol around here , not like the old days

Too bad, I really enjoyed PassTime. My wife will be happy though.

  30. I really enjoyed the original Speedvision with its wide variety of automotive programming...even a little aviation and boating. As it gradually evolved into a NASCAR channel, I enjoyed it less.

The channel also had a tendency to take anything successful and run it straight into the ground -- for example, "Pinks" and "Unique Whips."
