In 2010 I went to work for Tom Hanna when he bought all the P-S Steering Box inventory. Tom wanted me to catalogue everything then build as many new P-S boxes as I could. I built about 45 new boxes and I rebuilt about 15-20 boxes for customers. I just freshened up a Race Car Specialties steering box for a friend. It is very similar to the P-S box. I have never seen a Race Car Specialties steering box and have been trying to find out the history on the box. I have searched the internet and have not come up with anything. I'd like to know more about this box.
@LWolfe Mine in my race car I think PSI ,its 25 years old tho , Looks similar / or same to the picture you posted, Mine Black anodized and billet
If yours is billet then it is not a P-S or a Race Car Specialties. My guess is its either a Strange or SPE
I have one that is going in the 1966 "Berry Bros" AA/FD restoration. The car was built at Frank Huzar's Race Car Specialties.
I'm guessing the RCS box was copied off the P-S. The main body of the casting looks the same as the P-S other than the web in the casting below Tarzan Calif and the round billet side end plate. It looks the same on the inside but I didn't check to see if the parts would interchange with the P-S. Mark Williams bought all the remaining P-S inventory at Hanna's auction.
Just curious. What do the internal parts look like? Are they just copies of the old Ross midget steering boxes? We used the Ross boxes in dirt cars here in the northeast even though they didn’t hold up well… they were inexpensive so just get a new one when they wore out
The insides appear to be just like the P-S. I didn't take the time to see if the P-S parts would interchange but I wouldn't be surprised if they would.
So is it just a pin on the arm engaging in a spiral groove machined into the steering column? Or is there more to the inside of the steering gear?
Okay thanks. Yes, it looks like a modern version of the Ross box internals, probably better materials. It’d be interesting to mess with one, but I have no need for one.
