here is a video i made for you guys on the Nazi racing subject.
    http://media.putfile.com/germanracers

Great Read, Ryan.. very cool and I immediately recognized it since I studied Nazi Germany for my degrees under Dr. Rodney Anderson at FSU.

I went ahead and uploaded a video on the cars you are talking about that really gives a feel for how amazing and drastic Nazi Germany science and technology was at the time.

they surpassed us in every single way possible, and then some.
first to split the atom (but believed in hard-water research for nuclear power which was more unstable, which helped us beat them in the end to nukes.....
the first forward swept wing (which we did not duplicate untile the 1980's)
the first all wing bomber which had some stealth technology (duplicated by northorp with our B-1 bomber 60 years later) you can see one in smithsonian now
the first power steering (needed it for tiger tank)
the first ballistic missile (V-2 by von Braun how designed our saturn 5 taking us to moon, the THE ONLY ROCKET TO NEVER FAIL TO THIS DAY, APOLLO FAILURE WAS FROM CAPSULE, NOT ROCKET
best machine gun (mg 42) best pistol (p-38) best sub machine gun (mp-40)
i could go on but it would take about 5 pages.

many of the german scientists hated the nazi party like von braun who risked his life by sneaking his research away from the SS during the last days of WW2, how do we repay the german scientists for taking us to the moon? the damn tree huggers and PC people are removing the german scientist from the space hall of fame one by one now that they are dead, fucking back stabbers.

I work for VW and Ive been able to see a few of those prewar pictures before, like the one with Ferdinan Porsche looking over the engine. Some of that stuff was so ahead of its time it really sucks the nazis had to ruin it all and try to take over the world, if only we had been able to see the progression of their race cars and the crazy areodynamics they were testing. I agree the stuff Auto Union Deutschland International was racing with was needless to say, really cool looking. Id like to see more pictures if you have them.

interesting, did not know that about the kiwi guy....

But what i think they mean is splitting the atom with any chance or understanding of how to harness the energy from it? the technology/equipment of the kiwi's time would not allow him to make power or a weapon from it back then i think. why else would the overlook him?

  6. Probably for the same reason no one remember the first four defeat's the Japanese suffered in WWII were, Milne Bay, Gona, Sanananda and Buna all by the Australian Army.

You'll never convince me that a p38 is better than a 1911 Model colt .45 auto.

I agree that the feel and balance/grip of a .45 can be argued to be the best.

but......... military historians agree that p-38 which replaced the luger in 1938 was way ahead of it's time and the finest pistol of ww2. if you look at the beretta 9mm and look at the p-38, theya re identical except the barrel is slightly different. this shows you how far ahead of time the p 38 was.

it did not need to be cocked in order to fire once you slid a new clip in it... this was an insanely advantagous factor. it was simple and even more reliable than the luger.

doesn't the 1911 have 140 parts or something? that's ridiculous. but i love it as well.

and i can't tell you how many russians and americans dumped their issued guns when they came across mp-40's. (machine pistol 1940) the beauty of these is that the germans figured out how to stamp most of the metal parts and only machine the simple/small/and masterfully engineered parts to put the gun together in a short period of time.

the AK 47? that was a rip off from the first assault rifle made by the germans during the Late war in 1944... the russians ripped everything off..

russians stole our b-17 plans, and never could have built the mig without english and german jet engine designs...

Do yourself a favor, find a WWII vet and make him your new best friend. Do you have any idea how fast they are dying? Keep in mind that the guys that fought and won the war were only a little older than you, and some of them were your age. A lot of the "other side" were your age and probably younger.

Read some Stephen Ambrose books, they are informative and easy to read. I have to warn you though, once you start studying about the war you will get caught up in it pretty quick.

The misguided, tyrannical dictatorship we all know and hate: nazis. A considerable body of scientific invention was conceived east of the Rhine before and during the war.The practical application of German scientific research in the solution of industrial problems was far more advanced than in other nations. Fortunately for us, internal paranoias and political factors prevented the nazi war machine from using much of its expertise efficiently. There are many examples of breakthrough developments in priority programs being relogated to obscurity as a result of an overall change in policy or strategy on the governemnt level.
    -guided anti-aircraft missiles
    - detailed discussion of flying saucers
    - "air" cannons capable of knocking down squadrons
    - night vision
    - maneuvarible bullits and guns that fire around corners
    - rocket planes, sonic torpedoes, sonic death ray weapons
    - sarin gas, and even worse-- soman gas
Some of the advances could have changed the tide of the war if not for Hitler's instability. Many technologies credited to the Germans were not as far developed as most people think. Lucky for us the nazis made cardinal mistakes politically, strategically and scientifically. Certain aspects of German culture also played a part.
Here's a pic of a book to look for that talks about some of the programs. Very enjoyable.
German scientists such as Von Braun made America first on the moon. Much was gained in US aerospace from captured German research and technicians.
That being said, I still HATE Illinois (or anyother kind) of nazis. The science and technoology is fascinating though.

I'll do ten paces with a 'military historian' any day with choice of weapons. I'll take a 1911. Regarding 'ahead of the times', remember what the 1911 designation specifies.

On topic, it is hard to stand up and espouse the great work of the Nazi-era scientists without sounding like, well, a Nazi. It it a shame that the German names of the era get less recognition than others, but the science lives on. Any true scientist will appreciate that. Besides, they're all dead now, the dead don't care who's talking about them.

Anyway, I think the German/American/whatever scientist comparison is rather silly. Scientists are scientists, wherever they are. Different cultures nuture science for better or worse through history. The Germans in the 30s-40s were given some great resources to work with, and as we know, some great engineers had to see their work turned to shit do to the politicians in control. It's still happening today. Our current regime in the US is taking the voice of true scientists away from the table where policy is made.

    Politicians hate smart people.

  15. I beg to differ on the 1911 .45 and the P-38. In my opinion the greatest side arm ever made is the Glock 19. I base this on experience. I have carried and used the .45, Browning FN 9mm, Glock and a .38 revolver (POS for backup) in combat. The P38 I have only ever used on a range. The Glock has it over all of the rest, easy to use, clean etc and the thing is indestructable.
I went through a few of the Brownings, poorly made, gave away the .45 to complicated too much work to keep clean and jamed easy.
Trust me when your 150 miles forward of your own lines, the less often and shorter the time you have a weapon stripped to clean the better it is.
Having said that I appreciate the importance of both the 45 and P38, in there day they were VERY good, today they just dont cut it, thats why we no longer carry swords and bow's into battle. Move on, better things out there today.
    Doc.

and you do know where glocks are made, right? (austria used to be part of the german empire, before the November Crime of 1919 brought it all down)

germans have always made strip friendly pistols, I have a Dreyse 1907 .32 (the precursor to the famed PPK) and have you seen how the barrel assembly pivots off the frame? 100 years before the glock and it's very similar....

  21. Yes similar but better. I’m not discounting the weapons pedigree, just the real world application there off.
I will say one thing, discounting the weight the MG 42 is STILL the Best Light Support Weapon. The M-60 is a very poor copy of it, the Minimi is a POS that only has one advantage, the quick change barrel but with only 5.56mm whats the point??
Give me stopping power every time! 7.62, the only Way to go. I once pumped 5 rounds of F1 Ball from an F88 Austyer into a guy and watched him run away!! An L1A1 SLR, one shot would have ended the argument then and there. It gets worrisome when you put a target down and have to be cautious that he doesn't get back up again.

cool thread. My Grandpa was full German but raised in the US, helped liberate a concentration camp after D-Day, hated those Nazi bastards. He came back from the war, bought a '51 F1 new, and gave it to me when I was in college. We got about 1/3 through the resto before he died, but I'm sure thankful for spending a lot of time with a WWII vet, what a generation!
