Hot Rods Radiator Overflow Tube

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by MrNailhead, Sep 5, 2016.

  1. I purchased a Overflow tube for my 46 Tudor and the way the radiator & AC condenser is set up there isn't any room next to the radiator but while attending a cruise night one of the guys had his on his firewall. My question is...Should the overflow tube be placed as high as the top of the radiator or should it be lower than the radiator top?

    Conventional radiator or crossflow?
Most (foreign) modern cars with crossflow have them positioned high, above or level with radiator top.

With a sealed system (using the correct radiator cap, hoses and tubes sealed tight) it shouldn't matter, the system should siphon the coolant back from the overflow tank regardless of it's position. Any air leakage though will screw that up, it will allow coolant to flow to the overflow tank, but will not siphon it back to the radiator when it cools down. Then it just becomes a coolant catch tank, and you'll have to empty it periodically and refill the radiator.
