I just bought a Ford 5000 tractor radiator for my 29 coupe and fits the shell very well.. I use to use Mustang rads. but agree they don't fit well.. This tractor radiator even looks like an old Ford one and was $220 on ebay............Milo
hey s****, i looked it up on ebay but i had nothing come up, i googled it and theres a bunch that say they are for that tractor but they are all different. im confused
wtf... two pages and no one can give this guy a pic of a mustang rad in a 29 shell, haha! Here's what I ended up doing until I find a nice deuce radiator at a good price. Now this still won't help you with the front tank showing because I'm using a 32 grille, but it will help every other aspect of the appearance... copied from my roadster build thread.
Go to regular ebay, NOT ebay motors, or Google tractor radiator, then Ford 5000....... Top outlet just left of center and bottom outlet on right for SBC..... I had the top fill removed and am using an inline fill off a Dodge Dakota, also bought off ebay ($12)......
Those do have an old-timey look to them, kinda like a shoebax rad or something. Not priced to bad either... Thanks for the tip!
Ford 5000 radiator fit but 375 for a custom job on your radiator dont sound bad either.. i moved my filler neck so its easy to access..and it works fine so far. was 90 degrees and muggy engine running for over an hour sitting still , never overheated. I bought mine from some farm company out in wisconsen i think..USA made..no overseas junk my thinking was if a tractor making gobs of torque running for hours on end in the dirty work environment of farming, making all that heat and not over heating..it should do fine if all your cooling equipment isnt sub par I think mine was 236 bucks 2 years ago
Big Bad John's got it right. Get a Walker they fit and last. Why break your stones trying to get something not designed for your car to fit?
I got mine from these guys, nice radiator, you can paint em black if you dont like the bright alum. http://shop.ebay.com/koolradiatorscoolingsystems/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
arent we supposed to "build" stuff?...isnt that what "we" do? a walker that cost ?****ing stupid money? that does the same thing? so its a 1-800 bolt me in? wheres the adventure..? wheres the ability? wheres the imagination, wheres the learning? wheres the hot rodding and walkers are not a good look on a traditional build..IMO I'd say my 236 dollar radiator is kicking the **** out of a 700$ 1-800 bolt on, because i have 464 dollars to spend on BEER!, and "entertainment", in my book thats a win win
thunderbird-youre genius! that IS pretty cool, but im running the stock hight shell, so the stang radiator core is just a hair to short, seems like i would see the top tank in my 'grill' if you will. i agree with von rig, i cant afford an insanly priced walker....no thanks! im running out of money and getting close to the budget so i cant afford alot now. i put in a big order for all my parts all i need now is the rad, driveshaft, front window, and brake shoes and cylinders and two 550 bias 16's basicly im looking to not go over 300 for my radiator. i've already got the overflow tank that mounts behind the rad. the shop owner did say he would take my grill shell old rad, overflow and the rad mounting strap and configure it all for that price, he said he would make brakets for my overflow tank, mount the straps on the fixed up rad, and put a cap under the originalfiller cap. so it would retain the stock look, but it would have a smaller pressurized cap under the stock one, and also put the over flow line thru the rad and into the tank so you wont see the line. and re-size the water necks.basicly he said i can pick it up ready to bolt right into my car. i just didnt want to shell out that much. i do understand its not to bad for what he's doing..
Von Riggs got it right, don't buy a radiator that fits and lasts a long time. Buy a cheap POS and cobble up mounts and grille shell just so you can say you did it yourself. Von Rigg. do you cast your own engine blocks or do you just "build" them? You must be a "real " hot rodder.
gman, i apreaciate the advice, after all thats why we are all here right? but some of us dont have money to indulge on. i cant afford to paint my car,i bought an old used motor,i've s****ed together all my dimes to get what i have. so i understand were he's coming from. its costing alot to get this car to be half way traditional. i've got to save were i can. i wasnt able to even afford a model A. i got lucky and found a guy that had this car, it was so far rotted no one was offering much, so i offered him a running car and a T body and i got my A. i've sold all my spare stuff and bargained to get this far. and lot of folks on the hamb know just how to do this. thats why im listening to you guys!
gator- i know youre not being a smart ***, but i dont think im asking to much. after all look at my car. its not super awesome, but its pretty old school and my budget is 6k when done. im getting close by asking older folks what they did how to you fashion the mustang radiator to the old radiator straps to mount the shell on? and i think the stang radiator is so short, that my fan blade will chop the the hose on top.
I mocked up a '64 Mustang radiator in a Model a grille shell(I'd post up a picture if I had one), the mechanical fan cleared the hose outlets(barely). I'm glad you aren't queering out with an electrical fan. Maybe you can trim the fan, or find a smaller one? I recommend a shroud; that could do double duty and fill in the gaps, if you have sheetmetal fab skills. Actually, I built mounts for the Ugly Truck to put in the same radiator(I kept the cheap Mustang radiator when I sold the truck, for future bracket building /mock up duty. Another H.A.M.B.er has borrowed it, or I'd go measure it for ya), but that was a custom frame, not a stock Ford. I'll scan through the Ugly Truck build thread and see if I took any pics, may give you some ideas.
I'd split the difference, buy a good but affordable radiator, and make my own bracketry to mount it. I don't have the skills to weld on a radiator, but I CAN weld up brackets and mounts. One other reason not to buy a custom radiator/Walker radiator/modify the **** out of any other radiator, is if road debris hits the radiator in Bum****, Arkansas, you're screwed, but O'Reilly or Auto**** can get you on the road quick if you have a standard m***-produced model.
cool richard, yeah no electric fan for me, i got a short pump, and i plan on just using a small fan bolted right to the pully the shroud/sheetmetal is doable, honestly im just concernd about how it looks from the front of the car when you look at the radiator since theres no grill.
Lots of big mouths telling Model A how to cobble up a cheap radiator. Save yourself time and money and buy something that fits your application. Learned a long time ago that cheap is not the way to go. It costs you more in the long run. Nice Rat s**** metal.
My buddy just called, we are going out in the garage to cobble up some ****, so I don't have time to look over 16 pages, but I'm pretty sure I took pics of my radiator mounts, there were really just clean simple angle iron, virtually disapeared with black paint. A cutoff wheel would take 'em right off when you win the lottery and get a solid gold, diamond encrusted radiator to replace it(HAHA, just being a smart***), and you can have some fun in the mean time. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223155 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223155
I really like this! Really, how many people can tell a '65 radiator and a '63(traditional cut off year???) An aluminum street rod radiator, sure, but a 45 year old factory design doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, such as an alternator, or disc brakes, or other overtly obvious modern ****.
well i do repsect what your saying gman. i understand cheaping some things isnt the best sure, im all on board with that. my concern running a mustang rad is, well ive seen one up close and they look SO far off from fitting, they are just so small! and i dont see how i could mount it to the grill straps and mount the grill on it. i do however love the price. im leaning toward having mine custom built for the 375. im entertaining the mustang idea but i dont want to see it being so short when i look at the front of my car, and the work invovled to get it to fit. i was considering on telling the shop im in for 300. since hes offering for me to use his sandblaster to blast my wheels as well. i understand i dont want to have a rock take out my custom rad, but for the price i figure its about 200-250 more and my rad will look the way it should. i can stay in my budget if i can get a few things pretty cheap( old oil filler intake and a cheapy edelbrock 4 bbr will do it. in the back of my mind i still keep thinking about hwo short the mustang rad is and if it will look semi-okay.
yeah richard, i understand it can be done, and not to bad, i to like thunderbirds idea, i think thats pretty darn nifty. but wont it still be short? cause youre not raising the core of the rat itself?
Theres a radiator shop in pa That remakes these ,I cant remember the name ,But 375 and you know it will fit ,Thats a good deal ............
Call this guy, Superior radiator in Mt. Clemons mich(Detroit) He will build you an aluminiun 2 core to your specs. $300.00 shiped. his number is 586-463-8722 I got one in my ford Good people to work with. good luck Russ
What in the hell does the year of the radiator have to do with anything? Can someone with a bagged Riviera tell the year of all radiators. That kind of logic is BS. All that matters is does it fit and do the job. Model A, be careful who's advise you follow.
For $120 bucks, I went to a radiator shop where they cut to fit a Toyota Tundra 4 core they had siting around there shop. I just brought them my '32 shell and they made the radiator to fit. Doesn't look the O.G. greatest, but was pretty economical for piece of mind.
Id stick with a recored original ,The fit will be perfect .I would of went that way with mine ,But I bought an aluminum one instead and what a pain in the *** to mount and didnt fit that well .In the shell area.........
gman- yeah i know. as you can see i havnt made up my mind yet. all i can see in my mind is 'i want it to look right and not give my left nut for it' i guess its making me lean toward having mine all done up by the shop. i think i can get him to do it for 300-350. he said i can use his sandblaster so i figured thats a pretty nice shop owner.he said he wants all my stuff so he can build it to fit so im waiting on my overflow to get here tomorow. i guess i should just be asking- do you guys think that 300-400 to have mine fully built to be pressurized, all the outlets changed and recored and all of that jazz with overflow brackets is a decent price. if i do it i wont be able to get my last few parts but i think the radiator is a pretty huge part and it would be nice to get it out of the way.
