1952-59 Ford ragjoint/flex coupler

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by Rockabillykat666, Mar 15, 2011.

  1. so here's a dumb question that's been bugging me. the guy i bought the delphi steering box from gave me a parts list of stuff i'll need. now a lot of his prices were pretty steep so i bought everything online. the only thing that's troubling me is what ragjoint to buy because he has 2 listed these are his exact words 18mm DD smooth x 3/4 inch smooth steering flex coupler and 18mm DD smooth x 1 inch DD smooth flex coupler. he said the ragjoint from a grand cherokee or late model chevy would work. in my research no ragjoints are listed as being smooth.. what does smooth mean? i'm guessing this is the correct rag joint? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BRG-055052/ i still need a bushing or something to connect the steering column to the ragjoint right? this is for a 55 fairlane. i've never touched a steering column so sorry for the dumb questions.

smooth means no splines. if your cutting off your original column. then it would be round not a dd unless you grind 2 flats on the end of your shaft. most guys that cut off there shaft drill and pin them then weld it . you would need a bushing/ bearing to put in the end of your housing to center your shaft.

Johnny , the DD are more for the newer columns than the old spears we have . I would just do like said Old Lady Mad said and use a universal joint and drill the shaft and use a roll pin or use a grade 8 locking nut & bolt .
You could use the rag joint on the new steering box but the universal joints are a lot cheaper and look better IMO . Yes you could do the U pull it but with what you are doing , I would use nothing but new parts !
    Just my opinion .

the 18mm dd is for the jeep box. you need a smooth round for your shaft. which ever size it is . im thinking im gona go with a ford tilt column in mine

  5. If it helps anyone , I used '66 thunderbird column in Wifeys ranchwagon . Works out fine for length, and takes a stock wheel if you need to .

It looks like that collar around the steering column jacket may be a bearing or bushing of some kind to keep the actual steering column from flopping around.

  9. on my parts list the guy has Power steering shaft lower column support bushing listed for $45

  10. this is from the guy selling the delphi kit on ebay. I found a brand new borgeson power steering pump with bracket and pulley for $40 last year on ebay so i jumped on that. i still need the hoses to go from the ford pump to delphi box and of course the correct ragjoint or U-joint to connect the box to the steering column..i sure wish somebody did this conversion cause the seller of this won't give away all his secrets

  11. all he sent me was pictures. no part #'s
