Sorry to keep asking Bonneville questions on the HAMB, but the weather forecast looks grim for the next couple of days. I'm seeing storms for later today, tomorrow, and Saturday, and even a flood watch. My flight plans only included Sat, Sun, and maybe a little Monday. The rest of the week is looking dry. How much rain is too much? Been watching the weather there for weeks. Now, it rains.. I know it's been canceled in years past due to wet conditions. The big weather map shows a helluva lot of rain over a widespread area. Hate to keep nagging all the Bonneville veterans here, but I'm thinking I screwed up by not planning to stay later in the week... Work schedule, costs, the usual reasons. So what does the HAMB forecast? Thanks, Bill
When I took my son a few years ago, we were staying in Salt Lake City. We took the ride out to the salt one day, and nothing was happening due to previous rain. I happened to run into a SCTA official (Jill) and explained my situation, and not wanting to drive back out a few days later for nothing. She was gracious enough to give me her personal number and told me to call her the morning before we drove back out. Wound up drying out enough and it was a go!
It can rain a downpour and have standing water on the salt then be raceable the next day. Large pools of water can migrate with the winds. The only way to know is to be there and ready to race
Why not just watch Landracing.com ? They are already on the salt setting up and announcing real weather conditions, not predictions.
Water or puddles that some a**holes just must drive thru at 50 mph is why pickup trucks are sacrificed to the salt gods everytime it rains. Everything aluminum turns to Alka-Selzer by the time you get home. Anything cast iron will rust from the inside out… that’s all your brake parts and cables and now your electric motor e-brakes. I’ve been watching the weather and everything (rain) in the So Cal mountains is heading that way. The tracks do a good job of drying out but the pits and return roads usually take a beating along with the end of the road..
This is a shot of Pat McDowell that was posted by SCTA at 7:55 Pacific time. As of now the salt is good and it is dry.
We were all ready to run after the drivers meeting first thing Saturday morning. The race car was inspected and all g***ed up all we needed to do was put her in staging for an early morning run. What a shock seeing it raining early Saturday morning when I opened the door at the hotel. I'm glad we always leave our race car in the trailer when we leave for the day boy am I glad we did. The video shows our neighbor didn't fare as well glad we could help. Were the guys wearing the red 200 MPH club life member hats.. Our team made the best of a really bad situation. Its a four day journey West an expensive trip with nothing to show for the efforts racing is certainly hard for sure. Ronnieroadster
This is a picture with the Friday night storm coming in the background. The Saturday storm was twice as black and forbidding.
