Technical Rambler shifter stuck

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by norby48, Jun 17, 2014.

  1. I am in posession of a 1959 Rambler American that has sat for 5 yrs. It is a really nice "little old ladies" car with 23000 miles. I need to get it cleaned up and running to sell for my friend, who is partially disabled. I know for a fact it "ran well when parked".
The problem is; the stick shift linkage won't move out of neutral. It moves back and forth, but won't move up or down to engage any gear. The arms on the column under the hood seem lined-up, but don't move, so it's not "hung-up" in gear. It is in neutral, I can roll the car. I don't want to force anything and break something.
It is not running yet because it has no spark. I can handle that.
    Any advice on the linkage?

    THANKS FOR THE REMINDER, AL

Ramblers are notorious for poor shift linkage. Somebody even wrote a song about it.

  3. Oh yah! I forgot!
