So what do you do with a half-rusted out old car? Make a trailer! Instead of posting a full set of pics and such here I'll post my latest and a link to the AMC board where I have a lot of pics and details. The link: http://theamcforum.com/forum/rambler-trunk-trailer_topic20151_page1.html Scroll down to the bottom for the first concept Photoshop, most pics of my work is on page 2. Some interesting trailer pics of others on the first page though. Almost finished pic:
I like the concept and the shape isn't bad at all. I went through the other forum notes - if the acrylic caulk is water based you could be doing a disservice to your trailer and it might rust out alot quicker than you think. Looking forward to your fun w/f-gl***!
make a *** kickin couch out of it & put it in front of your big screen or shop.hell , ya could even hang it out of a tree & make a swing for the whole family . got moe ideas if ya need em .
My '67 Fury might end up as a sofa or pool table if I don't make up my mind what to do with it. (What do you think... light it on fire or crush it?)
The moisture should dry out of the acrylic and then seal the moisture OUT. The caulk will be top coated with bed liner, and the underside sprayed good (or brushed if I can find it) with rubberized undercoating. If the metal is all sealed in any rust should stop. The visibly rusted areas were treated with a rust conversion chemical (turns it black) and a good coat of Rustoleum (well, Ace hardware store-brand equivalent) before the caulk. Didn't paint over all the welds, but as I said they should be okay once the caulk cures. I'll find out in 5-6 years, I guess. I considered cutting the thing right in front of the rear seat and leaving the seat up front. Would be real cool for car shows! Just make a snap-on canvas or vinyl cover for the front seat when moving. I figured I'd either have to pour concrete in the cavity under the front seat or make sure I loaded stuff on the front seat when pulling it to keep the tongue weight up with the back loaded. Trailer would have been a bit longer too. But rust was the deciding factor. Just a bit too far back on the rusted in half side to do it that way! After thinking about the tongue weight/loading issues I really didn't like that idea that much anyway. But it might work for someone else! Counter weighting the front seems to me the best idea...
The caulk and fibergl*** drywall tape worked great! It's more or less like "Cool Seal" or other liquid roof sealers -- which would have worked as well. I'm not sure they are paintable though. I've got some more pics on the website in the first message now. I was told that fibergl*** resin didn't dissolve foam, but that was URETHANE foam, not POLYSTYRENE foam (Styrofoam). I used some old styrofoam insulation to shape the front and covered it with fibergl***. Well, it's a little uneven, will need a skim coat of filler, but it did dissolve some. I should have covered the styrofoam with something -- butcher or kraft paper would have been sufficient I'm told. Will have to remember that next time! What I have will be okay with the skim coat of filler, it won't be any more than 3/16" thick in a few spots, mostly under 1/16" though. Just more work!!
wtf, chuck most , how bout a BBQ pit ? What ever , make it a movie . Christine-2 . Going to have to start charging fer ideals.
