That thought crossed my mind. I should’ve looked harder for one yesterday, I had already ordered that square socket, but that might save the next guy 14 bucks thanks.
After way too much delay BuFord is finally on the road. I just got it back from the tire shop. Oh the wheel covers are not on yet. That one is a Studebaker cap with a chrome cone attached. I’m gonna try different sets.
It ended up with a slight taildragger stance, which is fine with me. It’s maybe a couple inches lower in the back?
Not much to report, but I’ve been driving this thing around town regularly, getting plenty of thumbs up and compliments every time. On another note: when I started this thread, I think I mentioned that if I ever were to chop a two door sedan, I would slide the roofline forward in the style of a coupe. Well, I found one like that. Maybe I should finish the black one and sell it and use that money to build an all new car? Maybe I might use this as a pattern and chop the black one and turn around and sell this project car; you never know. The most realistic thing for me is to keep a running car and chop it over a week or something
Like the "sample" cap......looks good - I would have a hard time chopping that car - just remove the rear vent windows and install full glass windows
Yeah Tim I love that idea and I very well might end up doing that. It’s just that after driving in the car, it just seems like I have like a foot of head room. I kind of like a chopped custom. This one is chopped like somewhere around 2 inches or so I’ve seen radical chops on shoeboxes, and most don’t turn out so great in my opinion.
As for that sample, Packard hubcap, that left front fell off the first time I drove it on the curvy hill roads around here. I am used to driving an off topic car they called the ultimate driving machine and I take corners accordingly. This old 49 has none of that capacity. The tire rolled over and the cap went flying. I recovered it, but that thing is crunched in such a way that I’m not sure that I can repair it. I’m not sure exactly what these came from but I’m guessing 1951? Packard. If anybody has some, I might be in the market for one
Honestly if you like the top on the car that’s for sale I’d buy that, finish the roof really nice, and then cut the roof off the driver and swap roofs. Probably the best/ quickest way of getting what your wanting and on the road quick
Oh, I already bought it. It was one hell of a road trip last weekend from my place in Northwest Arkansas to Basically Mount Rushmore; was 15 hours each way. I suppose that’s a possibility. I have this idea of making one like that with a chopped Carson style top. The windshield is a pretty easy chop and I could re-create that part myself maybe. I could end up with two cars maybe worth something. I don’t know
