Thanks rld 14.....My car was my HS Graduation present in 1964 and it came from and old couple who traded it in at S&R Lincoln-Mercury in Milwaukee. Still had the pristine (not yellowed) clear plastic seat covers on it when I got it.
this heated windshields were far more common in Taurus and Sables. 1970 Thunderbird and Chrysler Imperial had a one year, one model option of a radio in the windshields. I have (or had I'm not sure) a couple of the T-bird windshields but have never seen or heard of a car that came from the factory with one. another windshield that didn't work most were early 80's Buicks was a plastic innershield that was to protect you from glass slivers if you hit the windshields. Airbags seem like a better option t
My '57 Plymouth Fury is equipped with twin 4-barrel carbs, as all were that year. The interesting factory options it has are these- Hi Way Hi Fi in dash record player, Steering wheel watch [a clock that is self winding that is mounted in the center of the steering wheel. ---John
Galen goviers book on mopar production lists TWO chrysler new yorkers equipped with the 426/TF combo in i believe '68 or '69. That's gotta qualify as rare. cool too!
Bought a '64 Chevell 2dr wagon in '66 for $1,500. it was the el-cheep-o stripped model with a factory 283 power pack and 4 speed. neat car. Norm
If ya want... PM me your email address and I'll send ya the scans of it from the factory shop manual.
In the early 60's we lived next to a small town chevy dealer. when they ordered a new 64 Impala and the salesman checked the wrong interior color on the order form and the car came in blue with a green interior ! So you guessed it---they had to order a green car with a blue interior and switch interiors ! The salesman was part owner but I don't think the mechanics ever let him live that onr down !!!
My buddy bought a 70 plymouth satelite covertable that had a slant 6/3 speed from the factory- it was a special order salesmans car. The 3 speed trans was different than the ones in the smaller cars and we could locate one when it finally blew up so he swapped in a 5 speed out of a duster. The only way he could get the shifter to fit was to turn the shifter arms upside down which basically reversed the pattern. No one else could drive the car.
My son just bought a 55,000 mile original 66 Caprice 4Dr with a 396 and ALL options....black on black....what a car. Second owner!!!!
Monte Carlo club claims no 454 sticks, there were 402 rats w/4 spd. I did up my own SS454 4spd, no build sheet, I can live with that.
------------------- Maybe that 'factory' rear seat 'mini-bar/booze stash' option wasn't quite as unique as I thought it was then. Rare, because until you mentioned your old high school shop teacher having two of those cars equipped with a factory rear seat 'bar', I'd never heard of another one factory-equipped with one. It still must been a pretty rare option though, but just not totally unique or "one off" as I had thought. I remember the "model name" badging you mentioned - it didn't say "Luxus" - or at least, not on mine, anyway. Beside the regular "Oldsmobile" and "98" badges, mine had some additional badging in various places that read "LS" and "Luxury Sedan". Could that be actually what you remember as "Luxus"? I remember the paint on mine was 'unusual' too, at least for an Olds - because I looked up the original GM paint code number for it, when I needed to buy some paint to re-do the fender skirts before I sold the car. The car was painted a very deep, light 'blue-gray' metallic color, that, depending on the light, also had an additional, very faint, but definite "baby blue" hue to it. (Hmm?? Factory GM 'flip-flop' paint in 1965! Who knew??!!) The paint code turned out to be "92", which when I went to the paint store, came out as a 1965, supposedly, Cadillac-only, "Sheffield Firemist" light blue metallic. I sold the car in 1980 for $1100, which was an OK price for it back then, but it's one of those numerous cars from my past that I wish I still had today. I've never seen another quite like it since. Mart3406 ------------------ P.S. Just as I was about to hit "send" I noticed "grease4life's" post, showing the '57 Eldo' magnetic 'shot glasses'. From the picture at least, other than the Eldorado ones obviously not being engraved with an "Oldsmobile" crest or script, those look twins to the ones in that came in the back seat bar on my '65 'LS' Olds 98! Thanks for posting that pic! ==========
1957 Mercury turnpike cruiser had a power rear center window Early 1960s Chrysler products had front seats that would swivel at the push of a button to make entry and exit easier
According to Mopar, the first year the 426 was available as a factory option in a street car to the public was 66.
Could very well have said "Luxury Sedan" - this was in 1979, so memory was a little fuzzy.... Both these cars were a really dark burgundy-purple color with black vinyl roofs.
When I was a kid about 1964,I remember we had a (I think) 58 Olds 88 four door. This car had a radio that pulled outta the dash with a little handle that you could carry it with and listen to it! Then a little cover slid down to block the hole in the dash when the radio was removed! I have never seen one since, did I dream this or......Can anyone show me pictures of one?
Pontiacs too. I had a 58 Pontiac with one. They're called Trans-Portable radios. I have also heard that they were available in Buicks too but haven't heard of one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-1959-P...-Portable-Radio-Head-/310119095393#vi-content And there's one on da Bay....
Those are called the "Vanities", they came with every Eldo Brougham made from 57-58. There's some websites that get into them, certain items are being reproduced too. I do know that the handful of them that I have seen on eBay bring absolutely stupid money, especially that perfume atomizer, it's supposedly worth thousands.
1966 Caprice (I know a little off topic) with an L88 427, 4 speed, bench seat, Police Interceptor package, Factory AC, PS/PB... it was used to run a little shine. Sitting and rotting at a family members farm, under a cover in an old barn. Says if he pulls it out, he may be subject to police investigation...LOL
If this car actually exists at all and it's a 427, it's possibly an L72 425hp/427, and more likely, an L36 390hp/427 - but it's *definitely not*an L88. Not even "special order" or part or some supposed "police package". First the L88 wasn't even produced until late in the 1967 model-year - ie - at least a full year after the '66 Caprice you mention would have even been built. Secondly the L88 was only ever offered in Corvettes - not in any Chev. passenger cars ever - and only from mid-1967 through 1969 - and only in extremely limited quantities - ie - 20 in 1967, 80 in 1968 and 115 in 1969 - and then too, only in Corvettes also ordered with heater, AC and radio deletes. The only way a '66 Caprice - or any other Chev passenger car for that matter, could have a genuine L88 in it would be if someone bought an L88 engine over the counter and retrofitted it. Sorry, "BettyBlue", but I'm calling major B.S. on your buddy's "factory" 'L88 - special order, police package ' '66 Caprice. Mart3406 =============
Some were "dealer" installed L-88's... Think Dana Chevrolet, Berger and Baldwin installed those... And maybe even Yenko... Most were the L-72's till the copos came around...
Calling major BS is extreme. Mistaken maybe but BS is BS. I think it was Maryland state police that had a bunch of '66 sedans with L-72's with automatics in them. One used to run at York US. 30 in the colors.
Totally OT but I saw a final-year slant six powered Dodge pickup (at the LaGrave Swap Meet in Ft. Worth last weekend) that had a factory automatic overdrive transmission in it. Back when I was into slant motors, I was always told that slants didn't ever come with overdrives. This one was a near-perfect, 37K mile original. The owner said he took it into a dealership several years ago and the mechanics all gathered around it in disbelief.
The neighbor of my girl friend was a Pontiac mechanic, and he ordered a 1971 Pontiac GTO "The Judge" convertible, Stage IV Ram Air Hurst shifter fully optioned, including factory air conditioner, with all of the necessary hardware, in the trunk. They wouldn't install the air conditioner on the factory assembly line.
Sorry if these were already mentioned (didn't see 'em): - '58 Edsel steering wheel push button gears - 50's Mopar steering wheel clocks (just turn steering wheel to wind them) - this pic is of the "DeSotomatic" .
I had a chance to buy a 1966 Nova in 1980 for 2500. A neighbour had in it in Calgary. it was high mileage and rusty for a western car. Blue on blue with a 327 350 hp alum intake, buckets console shift 3 speed auto, 140 mph speedo and a built in tach. It was a fast car and would be a nice one to own today. If it was real it must have been special order.
