If you don't want it some time down the road I think it may fit some vintage 6 cylinder sports car. If you like it, have the funds go for it. Bob
Advice..... Wait a week, think about it and try to seperate your "wants" from your "needs". That money could probably be better off spent on other area's of your ride. This Mag won't go anywhere fast at that price so you've got time.
yes i maybe can talk them down to 8-9 i think it is a girl becuase her husband p***ed i think not for sure on the history on why its being sold but i can talk her down
pen a conversation and see what happens. It is always a good way to decide if you want to walk away. here is a story: I was looking at some Ansen Sprints at a swap meet a couple of years back. I have always had a thing for Ansens. Anyway the guys price wasn't bad but it wasn't a steal either. So I looked at the missus because she is pretty sharp. She shrugged her shoulders. So I went into deal mode, and offered the guy 3 bucks a wheel less than he was asking he came back with a price that was 3 bucks a wheel higher than the asking price. I couldn't get him to budge five cents a wheel so I walked. 15 minutes later I ran onto something that I really needed that I would not have the cash for if I had bought the wheels. I guess its a fluke but if I see something that I think I cannot live without and the fella won't deal not even a penny I always take it as a sign that I can live without it.
[QUOTE Something like that would have been run on an injected digger along with a cross flow head, but not in a low budget door slammer and by the late '50 any door slammer would have been running an 8 cylinder as a rule. Not to say that no one ran a 6 in a car, but it would not be likely that you would pop the hood of a gas coupe/sedan and expect to see an inline 6 by the time period mentioned.[/QUOTE] I agree with PB. Personally, I'd blow the cash on other needs for the build. Good luck.
lol lots of "no offense" here because you are probably very young and new to old cars .. we all were once no offense but those guys int he 50s you talk about WANTED nice paint ... and saved towards it usually .. also they probably wuoldnt have put a mag on that car unless the motor was fully built otherwise theres no real point .. (before you get all heated i did definetely see your car at WOW) no offense, but one cool part (and i wont argue that its cool) on a car with bad primer, bad chrome is unimpressive to say the least .. also, before you consider it crazy rare, remember you can ALWAYS have one made from vertex parts and a stock dizzy if you know the right guy (paging glen) no offense .. but either better paint or some chrome work needs that $1000 long before a weak inline 6 ... and hows your interior? ps #2 - in the 50's, magnetos were about $130-150 in the mid 50s .. not chump change at all ... a brand new '51 chevy belaire cost $1914 ... so a mag is almost 10% of the cars cost ***ETA - sweet jesus just realized its a powerglide car also ... dont even think about it .. if you must work on the engine do a split manifold, nice exhaust, dual carb intake, and some pretty parts maybe a finned valve cover for that grand***
Talk to the seller and offer her $600 cash. I doubt if there are many folks waiting in line to buy that mag.
You do realize that if you take it out of the box and install it in your car you drop its value by about half. If you buy it just store it properly and you MIGHT be able to sell it for a profit 10-20 years down the road.
Nice car! If I had $1000 to spend I wouldn't buy a magneto. I would invest in a set of Fenton headers and a used dual carb intake setup for your car. Maybe a set of Rally America's little trim rings. Your buddies or the fluff you'll be trying to impress with that car really won't care that you have a $1000 distributor............
How much money do you have in the bank to spend on the car? If you have 20K and want to drop 1K on this- I say do it. If you have 1.5K and want to drop 1K on this I say dont.
I think a few more years of school and some punctuation detention cl***es would do you WAY more good than a magneto for a stock stovebolt, or even a dusty shelf. What you have is "get-itis". Just because you can afford it, doesn't mean you should buy it. Leave it to a collector or a true hotrodder with an engine that will benefit from a nice hot spark. You might also want to learn the science behind magnetos and why they're usually relegated to use in aircraft and racing engines. And please - quit dreaming that ANY of your cl***mates is jealous. You'd be surprised how seldom they even think about you and your world. vocabular/spelling/punctuation first....then magnetos dj
Damn!! I can't even read these run on sentences. Makes my brain hurt. It's a magneto, not a Barbie doll or a Hot Wheels. It's in the original box... big deal! What are you going to do with it, put it in a display case and gawk at it? Paying over a grand is dumb and an impulse buy. You found something cool and now you're obsessing over it. Take your money and buy something sensible for yourself or your car. You'll need to spend 10K plus to build an engine worthy of that mag.
You're ready to pump out over a grand for a mag??? Man have I got some things to sell you..... bring your blank checks!
Whats it worth? Who knows? It depends on how BAD you want it and how long you keep it. I told my Father in law in 1980 that he was crazy to pay $6500.00 for his 67 Shelby GT500. Worth about $150,000.00 now. I think his family is glad he didn't listen to me!
This says it all. I like the "punctuation" blast. Take some of the grand and spend it on headers, carbs, or better yet a nice paint job. Saving some of the money for youir future, like for post secondary education may be a good idea as well.
for a thousand bucks, i would buy a used HEI for reliability and blow the rest on cocaine and ******s
spend the money on something else, I had 49 Ford Coupe with a flathead six, dual carbs and header... ran a stock dist. things were just fine... save your $$$$$$ and put it toward your car on something else.
I LOVE rare parts and I too think it's a bad "investment". I do, however, think this post was totally worthwhile because I got to read the phrase "go **** in a hat", which is still making me laugh ten minutes later.
In my opinion it's too much $$$. It may be rare but that's because there's wasn't big market for it. And that market is smaller today. If you gotta have it I think $500 is reasonable...
