I actually looked at this car when it was for sale by the person I ***ume you bought it from. If I remember right it was for sale for about $1200. When I talked to the guy I could have gotten him down to about $800 without much h***le. Guessing you spent a few bucks and got it running then bombed the car with primer. White walls are new also I think.. I would not spend $1000 on a magneto for this car at this point in the project. A $1000 budget can get you a long ways at a swap meet like Jefferson. If you like primer then buy some hotrod flatz and at least get a finish coat on the car. Either way good luck on your project!

If your number one goal in life involves making your so called friends jealous then you are already off to a bad start.

The good news is that you are inspired to work in order to become a restorer, hot rodder and customizer. That in itself is admirable.

But as others have stated, you will get more respect in life if you learn to stop "text messaging" and use proper punctuation.

Nothing disgusts old hot rodders more than kids that are too lazy to learn the art of communicating and Punctuation/Spelling is a large part of that.

    As you found out here,
    hotrodders are a tough crowd,
you are young and lack the experience that only time can provide,
you will make many mistakes and will buy what you want,
And old guys are always willing to help you as long as you take note.
-And it's all good as long as you learn from it.

My only advise is that you learn to spell and punctuate as you will garner much more respect than that from which you gain of your "jealous" high school friends for a few days in life.

And don't ever stop building and/or buying what makes you happy.

A very fine line is what lies between rare and undesireable. It may be rare because it had very limited market when it was new. Rare only helps when 2,000 others are on line bidding for right to own it. If 3 guys bidding not so valuable . 12 port GMC inline racer guys probably only buyers for 6-cyl mag. Just my 2 cents I have alot of things people think I paid to much money for . But I don't care I love them thats all that matters it was my money I spent .

Must be tax return time. A fool and his money are soon parted. Paint and chrome would be a much better investment. But I'm old , what do I know ?

I do not believe it to be "rare".

This guy sells them and thinks they are worth $1050.

    Original question:

    I don't know. I haven't looked at these things for 50 years.

I knew a number of people who ran them on the street.

He's young, evidently has a few bucks, and wants it. Later he probably won't be able to do it.

    Airplanes run them. Very dependable.

    Farm equipment uses them.

And, after running the battery down to nothing with the tube radio late some night on some back road all he'll need is a quarter turn of the engine and it will be running.

I'll bet you that someone did the research online and found that link which now dictates the price of the one of concern to this thread.

Maybe they should have checked eBay for a "price check",
If so, the current seller would probably/now be asking $250 for the magneto and $800 for the box.

-Thanks for the post and link, it helps put things into a little better perspective.

Just wondering, what upgrades and how much money do you think your drivetrain is worth as it sits?
And how much do you think it will increase performance muchless value after you buy this?

Probably not as rare as you think. We ran Vertex mags in Chevy II midgets [and all the later V-8 head hybrids] and the drive end is the same as the later Chevy 194/235 in-line 6. Lots of used Chevy II mags on garage shelves. Buy one and change the cap. $400 is the going rate for one that is reasonably fresh. Most guys have switched to a crank trigger for better reliability.

Cool old piece for a bunch of money. I'd ask your Grandpa what he thinks about spending that much money on it. I'd listen carefully too.

If you havent already i would find a extra wheel and buy a tire so i would have a spare and a jack and lug wrench to change a tire.....cause i bet you didnt buy the extra 5th tire when you bought those whitewalls......just thinking out loud.

That is only if you leave it in the box. Once you install it, it is no longer new. Maybe place it in the rear window for others to see.

Thinking about it, it will do just as much for the performance of the motor if it was in the rear window.

  18. I think its a bad idea,
But I also think you should do it. Then in 20 years you'll be able to tell some youngster why its a bad idea to do stuff like that.
Ask me why I think its a bad idea.

I don't do facebook because of the time that I would waste reading worthless dribble. Then I thought about the time that I wasted reading this thread. Guess it is time for me to check out facebook.

If nothing else you probably won't ask such a question here again. Personally i would use the money elsewhere, even if "money is no object". I am a wiregr*** southerner and didn't notice the punctuation gaffs. The mag IS worth more on the shelf than on your car BUT DO WHAT YOUR GUT SAYS. Don't ask a bunch of HIGHLY opinionated strangers. YES it is rare. No I wouldn't pay that much for one. PEACE my fellow greasers!

Dont know if its worth it but if you can afford it go for it. Dont expect to get the same price if you decide to sell it later after its been run. "New, in the box" looses most of its value after you run it.

Most of the comments on this subject both pro and con are reasonable, and even some of the smart-*** ones are OK.

Having said that, I paid $550 for my Chevy 6 Vertex mag about 8 years ago because I like the 'look' (had one on a 394 Olds a loooooong time ago) and the cost at the time was no big deal to me.

As pointed out, most of the value is the 'new-in-box' thing; I'd recommend no to the purchase - spend the money on other things, the mag was the last major thing I bought for my project and it is still not done!!!!!

Why does the old adage, "A fool and his money are soon parted" come to mind ?

Buy the one for $250 at the link.

Spend the extra on safety and service cuz no old car is ever serviced or safe enough.

I agree. Just because you found something rare and have a little money burning a hole in your pocket isn't a good enough reason to buy it. I'd almost be willing to bet that you could spend that money on brakes and steering componets and have a better driveing, safer car that would be more enjoyable to operate.
Old stuff is cool, but it breaks just like new stuff. Get it safe first, then start adding the go fast goodies.

here I got idea for you
Do you understand the part of life where you have needs and wants?
If not, have your grandpa explain it to you. Then after his little talk, ask him to buy it for you. When that doesn't happen, you got your answer to should I buy it?
