Found this pic on Ebay recently whilst searching for information. We have a peir of these and would love some more information on them. They are the same as the wheels fitted on the Dodge Challenger Indy pace car that crashed many years back.
    Anybody know who made them?

  10. [IMG]while not super rare, those 15x4 magnesium americans with a small ford pattern did take a long time to find. the rears are the previously mentioned 15x6 crestlines.

HA! Yeah, sometimes you just get so excited that you can't wait to mock some stuff up as the car's sitting there in the sunlight...

Funny--we couldn't figure out where we lost an inch of clearance and then we realized that those radial fronts were a little shorter than the bias-plys that were originally up there. We might have to notch the bottom of the frame to tuck those suckers up in there.

not that rare....but a good story ...the fronts were originally on a 62 corvette m/p drag car ....i first saw these wheels when i was in the 4th grade around 1980 ish....(no crap) they were on the front of the vette owners 2wd pulling truck....at a small pull where i was from...for some reason those old nasty dark gray wheels stuck in my head....fast forward to 01.....i was out doing a job down the road from the guy with the truck....and decided to stop....ended up talking to him for well over a hour... and i ask him about those old nasty wheels...he just laughed and said i had a good memory , as those wheels had only been on the truck that one night...i told him if he ever wanted to get rid of them to let me know... fast forward 6 years.... he shows up at the shop and mentions he's going to sell his vette and some parts and the pulling truck...i sold a bunch of stuff for him and he says to come out and get some more stuff to sell......then he pulls out the wheels...a deal was made....and those fronts and a pair of 15x8 smoothie rears that were last on his fiat comp coupe back in 62 , end up at my house....they took a few years to get ...but the wait was worth it...:D i've got a couple other pairs ...some 15x4 mag 5 spokes & 10" rears that were supposed to have been off of a jack merkle willys.....a pair of 16x10 big window rears that were out of the ny area ....supposedly off of a fuel dragster.... if wheels could talk ...it would be neat to be able to tell where and what they on..... heck just looking thru this post , i've seen some that i used to own.....

forgot to mention ....the old guy ...he was a hot rodder back in the day ....daily driver..... 32 coupe....with a 392 hemi....told me he would park it on the side of the road and catch a ride to work with friends...also told me , my grandpa gave him his only ticket... brandon:D

The wheels? or the Hi-Riser? Sadly I've been bit by the Donk/Hi-Riser bug...But i'll be the only person with a '73 Impala with 28's, 4wd, and a built 454, to tow my trailer with...But that's for a different forum. Here I'm just the kid who aspires to finish his '29 Tudor someday...Back to your regular rare wheel programing.

Those were made by Motor Wheel.

    This isn't even old yet...but it's rare!

Edelbrock was in the wheel business for what felt like a week back in like '01 or '02. They teamed with Ultra wheels and made a few different styles. Each was tagged with a number instead of a name, and the numbers corresponded with engine sizes popular during the musclecar era (454, 460, etc.)

The deal went south and very few sets ended up going out the door with Edelbrock's name on them.

Of the few sets that were made, the rarest seems to be the "429" wheel, a six-spoke offered in 17x8 with 4.75-inch backspacing.

I have a set of the 429s on my wagon, with the optional tri-bar knockoffs. I've never seen another set.

(If anyone has seen these wheels, or knows where more might be found, please let me know. I'd love to have a spare or two in case I damage one. Thanks!)

  20. I bet a few dealers got stuck with display wheels when the production stopped - if you can get a dealer list you may find a spare that way.

I know of one other set of 429's here in Nebraska, A customer of mine has a '66 Charger with them, and the knock offs. The only pictures I have of it are with the stock wheels though. Good luck trying to find them.

  22. If they are 5 on 5" pattern, they are probably mid 70's full size Oldsmobile... I've only seen them on Delta 88 convertibles, but my observations don't mean much.

I believe these are also referred to as the "recall wheels." They were optional equipment for a very short period of time and a few sets made it to the public before they were axed. They had serious breakage problems, and are fairly rare... Somebody on Moparts.com could probably give you more info, as I've seen them discussed over there but can't recall the specifics...

I picked up a pair of these 6 pin Halibrand wheels with some old
    Firestones on them.

Anybody have an idea of the Vintage of these wheels:confused:

  25. Yep, those are Motor Wheels and the aftermarket versions at least were called Exciters. The only OEM versions I recall seeing were on the previously mentioned early to mid 70s big Oldsmobiles, though I don't think they were very common. Around here there were a few sets on early 70s Mercury Cyclones, but I don't recall ever seeing them on the Torinos. They looked great on the Mercs though.

I've got a set of four of these but without the caps or trim rings. 14 x 6s, maybe 7s, 4 1/2 BC. They're a Polycast wheel, steel center and rim, with a molded hard rubber face bonded to them. The face is either molded or painted with a textured finish that looks like a sand casting. And they're much heavier than you'd expect them to be. I don't know for sure but I always suspected that the trim rings and caps might be similar to some used on some mid 70s Malibus and Monte Carlos that used a turbine style Polycast wheel.

Not super rare, but the 16x11 Halibrands on the rear of my coupe in this pic are both stamped "KUHL" on the backside, and I believe they were originally on one of Mike Kuhl's front engine dragsters in the mid to late 60's...

I also have a pair of the aluminum Chicago Streamlite wheels on the front of my roadster, and I would really like to buy another pair if someone out there has a pair that they would part with or knows of a pair.

Speaking of rare wheels, I never figured out what wheels are on the deuce roadster. I think its owned by Paul Gommi or at least its his truck next to it. John

Thanks for all of the guidance on these wheels.
The ones we have are alloy and not polycast. I am aware of the Olds wheels but these were taken off a Dodge Challenger.
The mention of them being a 'recall' wheel is interesting as I read someplace else that they are featured in some of Mopars own publicity shots for 1971.
Sorry if this has post has gone a little O/T.

nothing overly rare but i've got the 15x7 mag solids for the back of my 34, the blue 17 early chrysler wheels are on my model a, and i wouldn't mind finding 2 more of the black artillery wheels, think they're 36 buick?

oh the wheels on paul's roadster are 30's dodge big truck wheels, 20x 3.5 or 4 with a 5-4.5 bolt pattern, not really that rare if you can find a 3/4-1ton dodge truck it should have them

  30. Floorboardinit,

Those look like standard Ford AA truck wheels.
