Just bought the new Ol' skool Rodz (kinda lame imho). I was flipping through the back and noticed that Gibbons is marketing a fibergl*** A-bone "rat rod kit" with a frame and all the channeling done for ONLY $7800 (LMAO). Seems to go against the whole ethic of traditional rods and is just for someone who wants the look until the next trend catches their fancy.

Oh my god! So it has come to this. Man, hang on guys. This "mainstreaming" of "rat rods" could really change (I know it already has, but I mean REALLY change) things. I remember when I started snowboarding and it went from extreme to mainstream, then 4 wheeling, went from trail running to extreme rock crawling compe***ions, now this. :(

It seems like all the things I love are being swallowed up by corporate america.

First was choppers and building bikes. I have completely lost interest in that since the whole Orange county plague screwed up the whole notion. I know that sounds ridiculous to here but I just don't want to be involved in the whoring out of a culture. I will quietly dig out my parts and start building again when the whole en-vogue thing envelops itself. As mentioned above 4-wheeling, and just about every other motorhead hobbie/lifestyle has fallen prey to this "sold out to the m***es" mentality. The problem is so many people have trouble with their iden***y that they will simply ***ume what ever seems to be getting the most attention at any given time. In some ways I welcome it, because ther are always a good supply of toys left in the wake after the swell subsides. i.e. the harley fat boy in the accountants garage. 6yrs. old ridden twice, always garaged. Need room for next thing in line. must sell cheap.

Talk a****st yourselves and get back to me on that.

I don't think you can manufacture "cool" The majority of us will know the difference of a 50-60 year old patina as opposed to fibergl***. Plus the correct "original" suspension details. "ole Skool" is big right now, everyone would like to capitalize on that. Those that have the real stuff will just see the value go up even more.

  6. It's a RAT ROD kit not a TRADITIONAL HOT ROD KIT... so I don't see why anyone here would be offended or think that it's a bad idea.

In fact, anything that gets more people into the hobby and having fun with cars is cool... it may seem mainstream in the rodding comunity, but in your BFE town, it'll stand out and be fun and cool to own.

It's my experience that the people who take offense to people jumping the bandwagon are the ones that aren't secure in their own roddingdom... and have the most to loose because someone has a pile of parts that is better than theirs mocked up in the garage...

    More to come...

    Sam.

Gibbons' rat rods are the "Merda dArtista" of the hot rod scene. The war was over a LONG time ago and "crazy subversive" stuff just isn't crazy anymore - if it ever even had been at all. Google Piero Manzoni - he got the joke a long time ago.

An ad in a magazine won't change what I'm building.

people have been doing this for sometime already, I mean using fibergl*** cars to build a car quick and dirty, run it in primer, etc...

these guys just put it in writing and took the requirement of some imagination to be used to pick out a gl*** body on a basic frame to be set up to rough rod.

I can admit I have had the thought of getting a gl*** body and building it in primer. I have built alot of stuff in me head. The fibergl*** **** is just too expensive

    Well said.

  10. I don't see it as a big deal at all. if there is a market it will sell. fibergl*** bodies actually help the Kar Kulture world. NOS or repop parts get cheaper and they are more diversified (try rebuilding a y block or nail head 10 years ago..good luck.) and it brings more money for steal cars. besideds when Joe accountant gets tired of his "rat rod" he is going to sell it cheap cause he didn't spend that much on it. there are going to be great parts on those things. If you don't dig em thats cool with me. Just get out of my way as I buy the things up for a fraction of what they cost now.

Hmmmm... they still had all the bearings readily available from several manufacturers for Nailheads 10 years ago. Today you can only get mains from one manufacturer and they ****.... Same with pistons, harder now than then, unless you want $700 forged... It hasn't gotten to that point yet... I'd happily take the parts availability 10 years ago over today...

Every time I get interested in some "underground movement" it soon goes mainstream. And then it is ruined of course. So, I've decided that I will hereafter only take interest in things that could never be considered cool by anyone anywhere anytime.

For instance, I am very much into polka music. I am currently shopping for a Yugo convertible but will settle for a Geo Metro convertible with 3 cylinder motor. I eat a steady diet of brussel sprouts. Though I have a full head of hair naturally, I have it cut to resemble a comb-over. So on and so forth. Through these methods, I have achieved a state of cool that will never be ruined by the media, the populace, or the religious right.

Call now for a brochure detailing my technique.

You guys are looking at this all wrong.

I'm going to wait a little longer, 'til the craze gets like it did with Harleys. My "rat rod" '49 Chevy will skyrocket in value. Then I'm gonna sell it, make a killing and buy a premo "Boyd" car for pennies on the dollar. Then when the tides turn and everyone gets tired of the "rat rod" faze, I'll sell the Boyd car (or maybe part it out) and buy me another "rat" for cheap. I'm figuring all of this shouldn't take more than 20-25 years.
Oh sure, I know, some of you can't wait that long....Frank. :D

  14. Does this $7800 rat rod kit come with a ***le? Does it need inspection and taxes pait on it's value as a new car?

I'll bang together old tin, thank you very much. It's cheaper and it's real.

We know what's what... I'll stop and look at a car if it has home built qualities... not if it's snap together, or m*** produced.

But that doesn't mean someone else can't buy one and have fun with it.

    JOE:cool:

  15. Can anyone scan a pic of their "kit"?

    If it's a body and a frame... it's a rip off...

Sam hit it perfect , they aint gonna build em like we build em. We build cars the way we want them , kit cars are copying what we do, so they arent getting what they really want , but dont tell them cause then they might actually build something of there own, instead of paying someone else to do it!!! ARGH!!!

I am again amazed at the content I find on this board.
An obscure artistic reference to an eclectic Italian artist.

    I friggin love it!

I studied his writing in a philosophy course several years ago.

The guy actually canned his own **** sic..(feces) and sold it.
    So there you go.

I would have to agree with that, if you live, eat , breathe, this wonderful obsession of ours. Why would you be threatened by this?

I happen to live in Kearney, Ne. Where Kyle Bond, (Gibbon Fibergl*** Owners Son) lives. I have heard here that Gibbon's went under out in North Carolina and this an attempt on Kyles part to get it going again. I have seen this "truck" behind his house, doesn't look half bad. But Kyle is known for throwing stuff together to make a quick buck.

Just a question, has anyone seen one of these in person or a picture of a real one. The cartoon in the ad looks pretty cool, and the frame stat's might be right on for the next project. Not that I intend to buy into the scene with a gl*** car of all things but if it looks like the cartoon they nailed the look for sure. As far as the "craze" goes I have to agree with what sombody already mentioned, when the next big thing catches on all the good **** will be back on the market at a discount. And some other fool did all the leg work of digging it out of hibernation for us.

  22. I wonder what kind of quack built that car...

  23. You know, he with the top on that thing, he doesn't have to duck to get into it.

  24. The painter of it must have been blind.

  25. With a street rod like that... you can't drive it in the snow, so you have to go south for the winter.

  26. He sure is treading new water with that look!

There was a 70s Vette with that exact paint job at the Frankenmuth show last year. A good hunting blind if I ever saw one. The ducks can't pick up fibergl*** on their radar.

Fibregl*** "RatRods" the low flyers were building them over here in the mid eighties, unfortunately most of us Limeys don't have the cash to build steel Rods, traditional style. Anyway, if everyone now wants to build a Trad style car then we must have been very cool for years and not even realised. The scanesters will soon fade and their stuff will be up for grabs cheap cheap. How long before they all wear Gaylord baseball caps?

Well one thing with this that MIGHT actually help us that build traditional rods with steel bodies is that it could alleviate some of the demand for steel bodies a**** the band-wagon-jumpers. Many of them don't have the ability or want to deal with steel bodies with rust issues(and all steel bodies have some to deal with), so MAYBE they will all start buying gl*** bodies, leaving more old iron for us:D
