Rat Rod Overhaulin

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bad Bob, Jun 1, 2006.

  1. Anybody who missed the Rat Rod Overhaulin show,it's on tonight at 9:00,west coast time,on TLC.I saw the car at the Back to the Beach show and its pretty bitchin! The guy lives in Long Beach and drove it all the way to Ventura, and he said he drives it all the time. You can't see all the detail on the show, take my word for it,in person its real nice!

  2. I saw it at the same show, and I agree pretty cool in person. They did alot that they didnt cover in the show very much like the dash. Neat to see him out enjoying it.

That was probably the best overhaul I have watched,I dont always catch the show for various reasons. I cant help but think that there was a lot of off camera massaging on that hood that Foose bent around the post with his hands. It looked pretty smooth and wrinkle free when the car was done.:D

Wow! Actually something to watch on tv on a Thursday night!! I wished they showed more of what they actually did, than the stupid pranks. I really liked that they put a 312 with 3x2 intake in it! It seemed there was more left out of that episode than usual.

    More tech, less antics!

    Rad Rod? Bitchin?

Still think Rat Rod is equivalent to calling your wife a bitch in public. You may want to , but there are just somethings you dont do.

It's not a rat rod anymore. It's a bad ass traditional hot rod.

The overhaulin car - the guys did do awesome work. And it came out a nice clean car, that did not look overdone. They did a good job. Caught the episode by chance because I was doing some work in the house and had the t.v. on during, odd twist of chance perse.

My personal take however - I actually liked the car before. It had some rough points I'd smooth out, but I'd have much rather had it that way. NOW if they just wanted to buy a body and frame and do all that work to it, with the end results the same, AND I could keep the original as well, that would just be fine by me. But that just my personal opinion. :)

scratchs post made me wonder, has anybody gotten pissed when they see what their car looks like? I dont see how you could, maybe its got sentimental value and you wanted to do it yourself, but your wife/parents/whoever signed you up just want it done and dont see how an old car could mean anything.

I thought the show was good, just not enough about the actual work, as others have said.

    Two things caught my attention...

They must not have finished the wiring, as the car wasn't started by the owner, as normally done...

And they used plexiglas for the windshield.....

Anyone know if the plexiglas was temporary to make it look finished for the show, or is that what they used as a finished windshield?

i like the pics where it looks like it has brown leather. I love brown leather interiors ala doane spencer. Still a very cool car.

All that AND a Y block? Way cool.

  20. love the windshield frame and the work they did on the body. When they started the car was a pretty sorry excuse for a "hot rod" (IMHO)The Tijuana blankets, furry ass seat covers up front. dropped tube axle. etc. Overall it looked like a clawfoot bathtub on wheels. I wanted to see how they finished the hood cuz when Foose was wrapping the sheet around a pole it had tons of creases. Not now though.

    Agreed!
It's strange; I never heard the term "Rat Rod" used during the whole program.

I'm begining to equate the term "Rat Rod" with; - "something I wouldn't want to drive!"
"Hot Rod" - traditional - or maybe "Street Rod"; OK.
But the term "Rat Rod" is starting to leave a "BAD TASTE" in my mouth!

Starting to leave a bad taste? :) Let's not get into that discussion...

I agree about the interior and the firewall... I would have liked to have seen a dark brown leather or possibly deap marroon.

I'm not huge on the firewall...

I LOVE the hood... LOVE the windshield... And the stance is perfect...

    Sorry about that ... :D :D (coffee's cold!! )

Yep, yep, yep, yep and yep!
Maybe the body could have been RED, then the upholstery would match better?
    But .. I'm not Chip! :D

  25. I only made the rat rod reference because the show called it that.It actually looked more like a rat rod before they touched it.It looked like a traditional rod with the parts they used when it was done. Bad Bob

Give it a rest! I'm so tired of the bitching about a term that is used everywhere. You're not going to get rid of it. I'm not saying I agree with the term, but jeez! People here need to let it go!

I liked what they did with that car, but to tell you the truth, I'd be pretty pissed if they took my car and pimped it. It'd never be my dream car cause they don't know what's in my head. Besides, it's the journey that's the best part.

  27. Shit, that's a "Rat Rod" ? GTFOH... I don't see a fake sheet metal blower that's spray painted with the word "Hemi" sticking through the roof , or 1 plastic skull epoxied to the grill...I'm confused

  28. That is a good lookin car. What magazine was it in? Anyone else have more pics??

  29. I can't imagine that someone would prefer the original to the finished product. Love the car, but not the firewall. The firewall is a tribute to Chip's Dad, because he had a fat fendered Ford coupe with a checkboard firewall, back in the day.
Duval windshields are the crowning point of a roadster. IMO.
One of the best Overhaulin so far. I really wish they would dump the drama crap and stick with the building.

So true. To the general public and to car guys from other genres (from sports cars to muscle cars) "rat rod" is simply any hot rod/custom that looks "unfinished." Pretty much no one means what you guys do when you say it. It's become the same as "kleenex" for tissues, or the like, just a generic term.

Getting offended by it is silly. At least they aren't calling it a dune buggy... ;)
