The shiftier handle has a annoying rattle, This is in the Ranch Wagon, I replaced the rubber washer kit and added lock washers and nut's to adapt the Hurst stick, anybody know of anything to muffle the sound? When I installed the short shift kit it seems to cure a lot of the noise. HRP
Rare weather here in the Sunny South, started out this morning with a cool 58 degrees and it;s in the low 70's now. Should be like that the rest of the week. HRP
Rattle at speed? My corvette had a rattling shifter at freeway speeds. It needed a rear bushing in the Muncie 4 speed. smooth as a gravy sandwich now. My off topic chevelle had a shifter rattle that was a bad front u joint in the drive shaft...
I believe it's a vibration rattle, doesn't really make any noise in 4th and 5th, and if I keep my hand on the shiftier it doesn't rattle at all in first, second & third. sounds like a few penny's in the ash tray. HRP
Mostly at regular driving speeds running through the gears on city streets, I guess I'm just noticing it now is since the shop magnum is down for transmission work I am driving the Ranch Wagon daily. HRP
"Noisy" T5 shifters are a very common complaint. There are literally dozens of discussions about it on the internet. (Especially Mustang forums.) Gear noises are telegraphed from the trans and up through the shift lever and knob. It seems like it becomes noticeable after switching from a stock knob to an aftermarket knob. The manufacturers must be spending big bucks to engineer stock knobs that can dampen the ruckus. There are even suppliers who want to sell you their special soft rubber gaskets that claim to be a fix for the problem. I've tried them out and I have to give them a low rating because I found that the gaskets don't work all that well. The problem seems to be the shift levers are one continuous piece from the dingleberry deep in the trans to the top threads for the knob. They are not like the old-style, Hurst-type, shifters that were bolted on the outside of the trans, away from direct contact with the gears and inner workings. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/t5-has-a-noticeable-whine.369729/
Anybody know of anything to muffle the sound? Have you tried duct tape? Oh wait that only works on stupid people.
I have an off topic S10 and the shift handle is probably 1 1/2 inches in diameter, there is rubber in between the threaded part and the outside, that is how the factory stopped the rattle. you put a solid metal shift handle on it and now it rattles, probably no fix to it
Seems there must be some vibration if it is shaking the handle ... which just happens to be a weak point & first area noticed. Trick is finding the origination of the vibration. Could be from a tire, a bent wheel, a trans bearing, a u-joint, a wheel bearing ....maybe you might have to monitor it and as it gets worse you can locate it? Good luck.
I had an OT car that developed the noisy shifter know. Turned out to be the metal insert in the wood knob. It had gotten loose. When I got it part and epoxied the insert in, problem solved.
A lot of times this bushing gets worn Aftermarket shifters allow you to shim these springs to take up slack and cure rattles. They are located under the two countersunk allen plugs on either side of the shifter
Yes sir, when I installed the new short shiftier I installed the new bushing and believe me it was a big improvement. I also notice when I let off on the gas it doesn't vibrate, on the gas again and it vibrates. The Hurst Shiftier is from a old 3 speed shiftier that I cut the handle off, I drilled and tapped it to fit the new short shiftier handle, all in all it's not horrible but I would like to make it quitter. Can you Fab a polyurethane sleeve into the shifter and get a threaded hex standoff and press it all together ? Industrial supply shop will have both or ... 8 bucks at the local flea and off ya go ! Actually - Tmans approach looks great all moving parts replaced . Hope you don't have to go any further if so I'd ditch it for an upgrade if this tranny is talking to you now I'd drain it's oil , get a magnet and fish out all the shavings and muck , repair with shifter kit per Tman , use a heavy oil ( I like LubriPlate , available at Industrial shops ) to alleviate vibration and save up for another trans I'd go with a rebuilt or a little heavier unit if your driving is heavy enough to do damage to this one . If the vibration goes away then comes back well it's time to start looking and it does happen quite frequently every driver is different style . I like to shift like a bomb goes off so I am going to have to go with a heavy duty unit or change out tranny's every 6 months . You May just cruise it and it last awhile . Hope it goes good with you after the shifter kit .
