Looking for some help identifying this Ravigneaux planetary ge****t. It is tagged with a Ford number indicating 1958 T-bird, but that may not be accurate. Were these planetary gears used in the MX and FX transmissions? I know they were used in the FMX.
I'v herd the term 'Ravigneaux' but wouldn't know how to ID one. I'v always known that type (yours) as a 'Simpson Compound' planet set. Hope that helps.
Here is an explanation of the difference between the Simpson and Ravigneaux' planetary gears. (wikipedia) The Ravigneaux improves upon earlier planetary automobile transmissions, such as the Simpson, which has two complete planetary ge****ts. As originally invented, the Ravigneaux puts two planetary gear trains on a single planet carrier. It has two sun gears, two ring gears, and two sets of planet gears on a single carrier. Using a single carrier makes the Ravigneaux smaller, lighter, and less expensive to make, because the carrier is usually the largest and most expensive part of a planetary ge****t. Thanks for the response, Fred.
No help on when Ford started using that planetary, but it didn't change significantly up to 2008 (4R75E). The Ravigneaux ge****t was readily adaptable to give overdrive without an additional ge****t, so the engineers went back to the FMX when they designed the AOD.
Ford first used planetary gears in model T both the transmission and also there steering gear, just or your info. No siginicignificant this thread. Frank
In the interest of adding to the general knowledge base (and possibly proving I'm wrong...again!) I found these two vids on da' tube www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbnyo9uUVKg
