Awesome. It looks like something Speed Racer would be testing. Absolutely awesome.

  8. so the whole front pan flips down to expose the headlights. I like it.

I really like those wheels, were they knock off or bolt on?

^^^ he mentioned a rear view mirror that sat between his legs that he used to navigate traffic, but I was not understanding how it worked over the phone. next time we get together, ill have him elaborate a bit more.

thank you very much. yellow was the original color. the red baron version was what the second owner did with it.

totally agree and thanks much. ill be showing him this thread if some of my other family doesn't beat me to it. he will be thrilled to see all the compliments. its very appreciated!

they were 2 airplane wheels cut in half to make a full set as mentioned earlier in the thread. however I misunderstood how they were made. he didn't have those fronts welded to vw wheels as the machine work involved wasn't an option for him. instead he said that once they were cut in half the sat perfectly inside of whatever vw wheels he had laying around. so basically they were hubcaps mounted to the vw wheels with screws. they he used Austin healy knockoffs from some wires to finish off the centers.

located the old hot rod mag last night as well... looks like the very first pic in this thread was from the magazine I have. which is cool someone posted cause its not cut in half like in the magazine. also reading the description in the mag, the side pipes are just for looks. also had the for sale add I had found in our local auto trader when I first moved to the boise area. if I would have had that kinda money at 18, id have picked it up in a second.
