thanks for all the advice about my 283 guys. im going to bring the heads in and get a quote on how much. if its to steep of a price ill buy these tell me what you guys think? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tfs-30310003/overview/make/chevrolet i was also wondering about cast vs aluminum my old man seems to think aluminum is really bad if you have a more ideal set of heads you would like to recommend please do
That's because he is still in the past when aluminum heads were bad. Nowdays try and find a cast head on a modern vehicle. Don't get me wrong there are some off shore aluminum heads that use cheap parts and the valve jobs are terrible, but for the most part they are a good deal.
That is the price for one. See if you can find out who makes the Jegs and Summit brand heads. I have heard some good things about both. They are a little cheaper than those. I was about to pull the wallet out for the Jegs heads but a decent used pair came my way before I ordered. At the time the Jegs heads were listed as being made in the US. Edit:I believe the Jegs heads are made by Pro Filer, not positive though.
yeah the only problem with the jegs or summit heads is valve size i need ones with a 58-60 cc chamber and no bigger than a 1.94 intake valve i see ones with 56cc and 64 cc but none really in the middle
the pistons i have are flat top with 4 valve reliefs im trying to use a cr calculator but do those reliefs come in as a negative or positive on the dome volume and how do i measure that
No joke I think some how to build your small block Chevy V8 book I hav e around here actually had that info in it. May have been in one of the who knows how many how to build your Small block that were in the magazines back then.
Go to Engine Quest CH350 I believe. 194-150 186 cc intake way better than any thing stock and they are iron. Our head guy says they are the best iron castings he has ever seen. They will be 64 cc. I cannot remember if the sell 58's or not. Today most guys go with head gaskets that are .041" installed. You can Cometic shim style like was stock to get compression up. You're can get the heads complete or bare. Since we circle track race with them we get them bare. Resurface to 62cc is ez. Use United Machine to figure your compression ratio. You may find with the shim gasket you might be close. Cometic MLS gaskets lists the cc's of the installed gaskets or you just need the thickness for the formula. I just lowered a 14.7-1 to 13.8-1 with a gasket change of .010" difference. Take your time and do your home work, it's not that hard using United Machines formula. Good luck.
I suspect most of the aftermarket heads will likely flow better. But, depending on how much HP you are expecting, I have seen some really good deals on double hump heads over the last 6-8 months.
Back in the day if I could afford them. I ran the 300 hp 327 194 intake Bacturin camel hump heads on my 283,s bored .060 for 292 cu with a carter afb and dual rams horns. some kind of solid lifter cam. for me it was a 097 or a 30-30. I would wind them until the valves floated or the points bounced. Never had a tach. With a 411 rear gear it would do 30 MPH in first 60 in second and about 100 in high.
