Projects Re Chopping a 5 window, turning it into a 3 window: Johnny Quintana's 40 Pontiac Chop

Johnny brought us his 40 Pontiac to get it re chopped. He told us that he really wanted a 3 window so we said "lets make it a 3 window then". This car looked good when it came in. We are just going in a different direction with it. This is a fun project!

My recommendation when planning modifications of this magnitude is, unless you have access to some sort of " photoshop" computer program, take some photos perpendicular and level to the car, make some paper copies, then cut-and-paste until you like what you see. I think to pull this off you are going to have to lengthen the doors and shorten the top. You will also have to increase the length of the catwalk or the decklid or both. Good Luck with your project.

 

we had a "40 chev coupe, chopped and made into a 3 window, in Longview, Washington.

It was in the late '50's built by one of the best body man in our little town.

Even then, as children, we pointed and laughed when it went by...

Told you..extend cat walk first....go a head...that will give proper dimensions or..looks like stretch marks...

However..looks great. Still . Cat walk first....otherwise looks like a 50 ford..no insult intened...

 

Appreciate your enthusiasm but we are a little confused by your suggestion. This car's catwalk and rear fenders were stretched 6+ inches before we started cutting it up. The angles are different, but if you compare the pictures from the pontiac we are working on to the pictures of the black three window above(40 being compared to a 39, we know), you'll see that the rear fenders and trunk location are already very different. The car already looks much better than the rough photoshop we did before starting. (didn't post it - "rough" might be giving our photoshop too much credit!)

It is still very rough and has a long way to go before its dialed in, so hang in there.

That being said, we are doing a total restyle of the roof/catwalk on this car. The fact that the trunk opening was already moved back plays well with where we are trying to take this project style-wise.

Love 50 fords and definitely don't want to insult anybody, but this doesn't look anything like a 50 ford. Zephyr maybe.
