ZMan, well-stated points there. Please help me with a question that, sometimes, may help ME (possibly others) from adding to "flab" that costs the HAMB money, which nobody in their right mind would want to do. (This, because I'm not a tech guy, but I do my best.)

WHEN somebody has already spent a good deal of time searching, and existing threads seem to miss the mark of the question at hand, I have tended NOT to post, as one question can develop into a thread that just stays on the system indefinitely, even though no longer serving any purpose.

So (and honestly, this is not hypothetical), if I do post a question and maybe even get it fully answered that same day, IS THERE A WAY, then, I can be a good citizen and get the thread deleted to save "space"?

I hope that makes sense and isn't way O.T.

That's quite ironic. I've just deleted two posts on this thread and I suppose that would come under the heading of belatedly holding back on a reply. So I guess the answer is yes.

I don't reply much to the threads, Look I've been on this message board for what 4 years now and have a total post count of what 31 I still have FNG tag, I hold back on the threads a lot for two reasons,
    1. I'm hear to learn what I can and my dad always told me Listen, watch and learn does not require me to type a response.
    2. I'm coming from the world of Muscle cars and don't really know shit about traditional hot rodding. although I'm learning a lot thanks to this site and you guys

I've seen a lot of people get flamed and never want to be one of them guys so I use the shit out of the search button, but sometimes you can't find the information your needing. I will even use google to see if I can find the answer.

But really doesn't matter what message board your on and I'm on a couple there is always someone starting shit or drama. 95% of all the threads are full of great information and usefull in one way or another. Keep up the good work guys.

I was hoping this thread wouldnt havr no replies for the irony. Ha.

But..i hold back because im 21..so i dont quite fit in that well...and i dont know everything..so when i ask questions..i would expect all the guys that constantly complain about my generation and want is to be intp hot rods...to answer..but i usually just get flamed or some stupid remark... hard to learn things that way.

And i apologize in advance for any mistakes in there...its hard in a touch screen phone in a vehicle to post rants.

  7. You should actually apologize for using your touch screen phone in the car. Hang up and fuckin drive.

Being 21 doesn't make you not fit in. I have never "fit in" in my entire life. I have a grandaughter almost your age that will never fit in either. That's life.

If you truley don't know and want to why wouldn't you ask? If it is a how should I build my small block question then it has been covered at least 3 times a year for almost forever you should use the search. For almost any general question the search is a good thing.

A specific question is probably a won't be covered under a search and those are always good questions. If you ad your opinion to an opinion post or ad what you know or think that you know to a post about something or the other, the outside most that will happen is that you will be wrong and you will find out that you were. You just learned something.

Maybe we are not gentle most of the time, we come from a culture that was never gentle. There is a reason that we were called hoodlums and it was not just because we had cars that were not main stream.

I wish that any of the younger set or even the older set that is just trying to fullfill a dream could go back and spend a day in the pits at about any racing venue there was. We come from people that are a little rough around the edges and we are not likely to change to make anyone happy.

If anyone on this board or in this world expects us to accept them the way that they are they need to accept us the way that we are. It is a too way street.

I was in the passenger seat. So dont blow a vessel.

  9. You don't need to worry about me worry about your own damned self or didn't you catch the drift of what I had to say.

That remark was aimed at about anyone with a smart phone. So I will say it again, hang up and fuckin' drive.

A great example of needing to hold a little back...the first sentence would have been sufficient. The snarky shit wasn't necessary and it didn't add anything of value to what you had to say.

  12. Short answer- contact a moderator and ask; I'm not sure if Alex or Kevin or Paul, Cob, etc. can delete a thread (they can close one, certainly), but Ryan can.

Long answer- As I understand your post, you've posted the hypothetical question because, in your search, you haven't seen an answer that directly covers it. If so, then it might be better to let it stay, because someone, somewhere, sometime, will need to know the same thing.

    Yes we can.

We can Close a thread, Delete it, Delete a post out of a Thread, and Edit a post without Deleting it.

    ( if we have to...)

But we'll leave answered questions up ( unless they are very O/T ), because that could be Info somebody else might be able to use.

This is not a Off Topic Thread.

But I agree it probably should be in the Q&S Forum.

    I'll move it...

Bad spelling, poor grammar. Someone asks a legitimate question seeking an reasonable answer and they get bagged from every angle. There is constructive criticism within reason. If people knew the answer to their question, why would they ask it in the first place. I just bite my tongue.

  19. Thank You a real person on the other end

    that is why they ask
i am an old foge been told i did not build cars like that back then

THANKS, Homespun & MetalShapes, for your constructive info. The reason I asked my question is that the HAMB is the ONLY discussion board I'm a member of, and I want to do what I can too make it informative and entertaining for all HAMBers. And, as Zman said, the HAMB doesn't drop out of the sky; it takes RESOURCES to support everything that happens. Every thread, every post costs, so idle and irrelevant material is unnecessary.

Anyway, a specific thread I started was the one I had in mind when I asked about whether and how to delete one's own thread. I had a chewed up rubber cog on my '55 DeSoto generator/power-steering assembly. I ASKED and was told within just a few posts where to find a repop. I was pleased AND shocked. But right away, I wondered if it was now just clutter in the system, with the question answered so quickly.

I think MetalShapes pretty much addressed this concern. Now, two years later, I can SEE the value in such a (albeit short) thread being RETAINED. It was one of those offbeat matters not previously covered. Somebody ELSE with a '55 or '56 DeS, Chrysler, Dodge or Plymouth might need the SAME repop, eh? Lots of you guys with those models may KNOW that if your PS goes out on those MoPars, it's like steering a log wagon, so that cog was and IS important, not just to me.

On a somewhat related matter, the phrase "post whore" seems to be the current fad buzz phrase on the HAMB. We all see posters pushing the edge of the envelope, as though there's a gold ring out there. I don't get that mind set:confused:, but on the other hand, it would be a shame if people held back casual (but perfectly legit) remarks. It IS, after all, a discussion board. Even on tech threads, there seems to be room for a little occasional humor and gab. That's part of the flavor and atmosphere of the HAMB, IMO.

But, I'll ADD: For those who lump all newer HAMBers with relatively high post counts into one neat bag with the one-liners and one-worders -- post whores? -- the world should be so simple. Lots of HAMB regulars spend tremendous amounts of time researching info and finding rare photos to post for the general benefit of fellow HAMBers. I've spent literally hours on a single post, AND I also occasionally post those so-called ATTA-BOYS. I figure I average an hour's work for every post, taking the long and the short together. One size doesn't fit all.

My point is, the world is not perfect, nor is the HAMB. The difference is that WE have it in our power:cool: to at least TRY to be judicious in what we post. Whether it's a tech contribution, an earnest question (even naive ones!), or even a humorous quip, if it has substance and contributes something POSITIVE, why hold back?:) If it's really OT, repetitive or frivilous, a mod will steer you in the right direction. When I was new to the HAMB, mods gave me pointers several times, until I got the feel of HAMB "culture.";) If you're trying, your thread mates may chew on you a bit, but the mods don't usually stand you against a wall and tie on a blindfold.

I used to hold to the "20% rule" which is quickly becoming the "10% rule".

Meaning that in most any given space, one of every 20 people, (now approaching 1 in 10) is a hopeless and miserable dickhead. Unfortunately, it is often that this portion of our society is the most vocal.
