Ones like this. Basically, how restrictive are they? I'd like to pick one up for a project I'm building. The engine cracked 700hp on the dyno. I don't mind giving up some power, but I'd like to keep it within reason.

I can only speak from experience, I run a whole second faster in the quarter mile after I take off my Olds air cleaner then when I leave it on. A pal showed me where to cut it on the inside of the air cleaner so I'll get more air flow through the element, but still retain the look. It's alittle project I have planned for this winter.

  4. If you look at those two air inlets and measure the square inch of it's area and then try and put those numbers into a round type element, it would be thin as a frizbee.

ahh maybe this? take a k&N aircleaner top and replace it for the original..the K&N has the top lid as another source for air intake filtered with their element..just a thought

  6. Don't use it... I'll give you twenty bucks for it though... in CASH!:D

Go the the K&N site, they have an excellent tutorial for calculating required filter sizes.

I believe the assumption for these calculations is that the filter is not shrouded on any side.

For comparison purposes, my combination showed I need a 5" tall x 14" diameter filter, and I estimate my hp at (only) 625-650 at 6000rpm. I doubt you'll be able to make 700hp with the amount of restriction through that caddy breather. Maybe a lot of holes in the back?

    jmho.

I found out that if you use the 14" filter it is too restrictive. Engine loaded up and ran, but like shit. I ended up using a 10x4" air cleaner and base, then put the caddy on top. Air flows in from under and will not restrict air flow but still has the good looks. You can also us a 12x4" air cleaner and base but I could not locate one, or at least an inexpensive one to use.

Thanks all for the info and opinions. I think I'll forget running the original type. If I can't find something else I think is as cool I may try building a 14-inch replica with larger inlets using some diesel exhaust tubing. Something along the lines of the same look but with larger intakes and a height that'd accommodate a 14x5 or larger filter. I'll post up if and when I get to it.
