I picked my Von Dutch book up from Pat at the Antique Nats... and man, what a cool book. Talk about being a self imposed complicated person... Anyway, I thought to myself... wow, wouldn't it be cool to own something that Von Dutch actually put his hands to and created!? Anyone here have anything that VonDutch carved, striped or painted? I found this on e-bay... mui-cool... but the Dutch experts could tell me all damn day long that it was engraved by VonDutch... but unless he carved his name in it, or someone has first hand experience that he actually did the work, I ain't buying. Would look cool on Mr. Bob though... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...tem=4556445012&category=35604&sspagename=WDVW Sam.
i was at bike fest in carlisle pa last year and saw a von dutch chopper, very cool. sorry i didnt take pics of it though. i think it was red flaked or rootbeer flaked, not really sure my memory fades me, but maybe somebody else will know what im talking about.
Sam, you need to see Jim Brucker's collection (whatever's left of it at least). He has (had) an amazing assemblage of guns, knives, paintings, etc. from Dutch. A lot of it was at the Von Dutch show last year in LA.
alot of people didn't believe my drill press was from Von Dutch when I got it. Even though its striped and signed by him. It has alot of engine turned parts on it also. Then I saw it in the Pat Ganahl book.. Should help prove it.. thats a sweet magneto anyhow.. Its should be worth what its at no matter who did the work
I would have expected a much more complex, graceful design, with more detail, and variety,if it was actually done by Dutch. That is carved so deep,it looks like it was done with a Dremel. The same piece was on ebay a couple weeks ago,and didn't meet the reserve. Cafeinne posted it,maybe on Jockey Journal.
He usually marked it with either his name or intials for something(it'll hit me about 4 tomorrow morning)................I don't believe it's real, he was too proud of his bike work to not put his mark on something. Prolly just someone trying to capitalize on a trend right now. I've seen a couple things down by the man himself. One was a car with original pinstriping......it was cool but starting to wear thin, kinda sad, but SO cool! xxx Brandy
I don't know what makes me drool more, the fact it's a BSA or that it is an original VonDutch.........maybe it's both! xxx Brandy
All of VonDutch's stuff wasn't perfect, on the contrary. I think it depended a lot on how nice of a car he was working on and/or the attitude of the owner. Throw into the mix he was an alcoholic, and you ended up with stuff that was shit, and other stuff that was nice. That magneto could very well be his, and...uh, maybe it couldn't. I look at it and see complex designs... but I also see where the guy was predominately right handed, and you can almost even tell how he was holding his tool when he did each part of it. I'd like to think that Dutch would have taken more care in doing the part... maybe, if it is his... that's why his name isn't on it... or, maybe it is a copy-cat part... the guy's auction does not definately say it was done by VonDutch, so... it probably wasn't. Sam.
Not even 100% what year it is. BSA M21. Late 40's? Pehaps an M20 frame. The striping is actually quite simple. You can still see a couple drips in the lines, and some sloppy outlining on the letters which cracks me up. Performed during a drunken stooper perhaps? For whatever reason, Dutch didn't repaint the tank first. There are a few spots where nicks and scratches were touched up with one shot prior to the stripes being layed down. I learned from Von Franco that Dutch quite frequently striped lines within lines. He spotted it a mile away before I even told him I owned it. The guy I got it from had it since 1977. The guys who did the green Ed Roth book are doing a Dutch one too. They hope it will be out by the end of the year. They are in no hurry as Pat's book it already out. They asked for photos, so the bike should be in there.
I got my Von Dutch book for Father's Day. It's been long over due... I would be that he did do that work on that magneto. He probably did that magneto along with a bunch of other parts for that motor. Maybe that is why there is no signature - he probably signed a part this is more prominately displayed like a primary cover...
My buddy has one of his knives. I've seen it in his display case. He stumbled upon him at the Cars of the Stars place, and said the floor of the shop looked to be covered in sawdust; Upon closer inspection it was cigarette butts! Dutch was drunk and grumpy, and didn't look so good. My pal reluctantly paid $250 for the knife (that was a lot of dough to him), but Dutch engraved his name on it, and set up the action for him. I'm sure it's worth a bit more now...
Ya, my big screw-up ... I met him when he was living in his bus in Santa Paula ... back in the days people would say Von Who ?..... Didn't buy a knife or get a picture with him...... What the Hell was I thinking ..... And yes, he was as drunk and nasty as they say ..........
also the colour or religious background of the owner . Here's a nice little tidbit I got off another board . Edit. Next time, please leave it there.
Most people love him for Von Dutch, not Kenneth Howard. If you love his work, then his personal lifestyle should be of no consquence to you. I love his work, don't always agree with his lifestyle but I will never lose respect for the man. And I'm sure as hell not gonna judge a dead man........ xxx Brandy
I know a fellow striper who has one of his knives that I've been trying to purchase ever since I found out he had it.Not only because it's a piece of history but mainly because I collect knives. As for the e-Bay magneto, who cares if it was done by Dutch or not;it is a work of art in itself.I don't know if I would have bid up to what it went for as I don't own anything it would fit,but I'm sure whoever got it is happy. There will be debates raging about the man long after I'm in the ground. My take is simply:The man, like him or not, started a revolution in the automotive world that is if anything getting bigger every day. There are many stripers out there who are equal to and better than him in regard to line consistency, overall design, etc.;but I would bet anything every one of them took inspiration from him even if they unknowingly did so. I only wish I had been fortunate enough to meet him.He will ALWAYS be my hero regardless of his beliefs or non-beliefs.Rant over. Ray Smith
I was Lucky to get my drill press. It was heading for ebay. I am actually very happy for some of the great items I have been able to aquire the past few years. I love them for the history. I use the drill press. Even though it should be in a museum.. I take good care of it.. I really enjoy it especially when it has a story.. The front spindle mount wheels came off the Hawaiian funny car.. I have an intake Don Garlits ran on Swamp Rat 1. . A flathead Cad Engine that ran Bonneville 1950. with a front drive blower.. Its really cool stuff and I want to put it all to use.. I hope I can
i think consquence is the key word of his line of thinking to bad the post was edited and ill be the judge where and when i feel the need to respond to a morons line of thinking bill
I'm glad that I scrolled down, cuz I was just going to say that I just happened to see Dutch's Drill Press @ Savage's place (mighty fine place I might add!) yesterday. It's the real deal. I know how dutch was personally, he was like a nazi! You just didn't rub this guy the wrong way or you'd hear it from him. Robt. Williams could tell you stories all day long about Dutch. Too bad he's being commercialized, He'd kick the sh*t out of anybody ripping off his name & logo like the clothing company is doing.
No doubt about that.. ask any of these kids running around in $200 Von Dutch jeans and $95 Von Dutch T-Shirts and they couldn't tell you anything about the guy. It's completely baffling, I'm amazed that the new owners of the Von Dutch name have even made any money off it, considering the people wearing the crap are about the furthest thing away from who the guy really was and what he stood for. Kudos to the new owners of the Von Dutch name I suppose for being filthy rich by selling clueless kids items with a name they have no idea about on it... I guess...
wow, that is cool. If each line was done one at a time...that's amazing. The price is at 1200 bux right now...Holy cow
