If they learned nothing else, they absolutely learned the real difference between an EV and a thumping snarly internal combustion powered vehicle.
    They heard it.
    They felt it.
    They'll remember it.
    They'll share it with others.

  3. Yep. There were several EVs there as well.
Some in various stages of repair.
But the look on those kids faces when that Chetah fired up is priceless.

Very cool Anthony, thanks for posting. A memory the kids will never forget. Side note, in post 65, the red packard roadster (about a 27-28 I believe) has the hood latches with a loop for the finger pull we were discussing a few days back.

  11. College prep is great.
Technical education is great. I don’t understand why there is a divide or debate on one being more important than the other.
A HS automotive instructor I know is having his program phased out for automotive manufacturing. What genius wants to train students how to manufacture a car but doesn’t see a need for the technicians required to repair them.:mad:
Education is its own worst enemy.
Our welding instructor was told by a college instructor that it’s wrong for him having so many students (43) compared to his (12). When asked by our instructor who is supposed to serve the students that don’t meet the 2.5GPA requirement for college or has a documented learning disability the college instructors response was “they can drop out of school then”.
This is the garbage we have to deal with. I can’t imagine claiming to be an instructor with this attitude.
We just had state skills competition, our school sent 25 students. (I qualified 6) Our local Jr college sent 1.
But we’re wrong for existing according to the jr college people.

At the risk of sounding sappy...one great teacher makes a huge difference. The ability to help a kid see things he/she can't envision is life-changing. I attended a private college prep HS but lived in a blue-collar neighborhood. I can see myself being pretty much in the same spot as a small biz owner whether I went to the public school and took shop classes or did what I did. Both are and were viable paths. Thanks for doing what you do.

I hate the fact that college “educated” people have a tendency to look down on people that went through an apprenticeship or trade school. I tell theme one has to build or repair the stuff those college people screw up or break. I used to love when I worked for Buick when I would have to go to school. I took every opportunity to screw with the engineers. One time I took a known good heater control head apart. I left the off button in the original position and moved all the others one spot over and put it back together. Before walking out of class I let them know I had done something to the car (hvac class). A month later I had to go back to school. As soon as I walked into the building 4 engineers started running down the hall at me. I took off and ran, I knew I was in trouble. They were kind of pissed but had a sense of humor about it. Seems it took them over 3 weeks to figure out what I had done! After that for most classes when they saw me coming they would come up to me and tell me I got an A and go home!! I had a chance because of my little pranks there to go to engineering school on GM’s dime. A severe lack of confidence on my part made me turn it down. I also turned down a chance to teach auto repair in Turkey for a year just name my own price. Man I was stupid as a kid! Anthony I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in school. I’m also severely dyslexic.

What a great museum and fantastic you were able to bring your students there, and confirm your abilities!
In this crazy world ( and getting crazier every day), I hold guys like you in the highest regard! Teachers, I always had respect for (maybe not so much now), but technical school teachers deserve even higher respect. And in today's climate of pushing kids toward college, it's a real honor to have a guy like you represent us car guys!

  18. Thanks. Not a museum but a repair facility with storage. It’s a “spa” for cars. If you need your Bugatti serviced and ready and transported to you beach home, they do it. Damage your Porsche? They pick it up, repair it then deliver it.
Collision, resto, paint, wraps, mild performance or custom mods, show prep…….
They are manufacturer certified repair and warranty center for high end cars. They can purchase parts that 99% of shops out there can’t because the manufacturer only sells certain parts to approved repair shops with factory trained techs.

That past few weeks there has been a lot of scuttlebutt about school closures. True? Don’t know. Suspicious? Yep.
    Regardless, we teach.
I took this job and major pay cut to spend time with family. At least until my kids graduated school. That was fulfilled last year. Didnt really understand or realize the impact this really dumb financial decision I made. The only negative was the $$$$. Far outweighed by all the positives.
With my kids out of HS, those job opportunities of going back into the shop are more tempting. The manufacturer gigs are sounding better. We’ll see.

  19. Anthony, you are The Man! I will never understand why the districts get rid of vocational education classes. Not everyone is college material. My Mom kinda forced me into college prep classes, but I got to take auto body and auto mechanics in high school. All I ever wanted was to be out in the shop. If I had been allowed to take all of the shop classes I wanted, I would have been valedictorian. We need more vocational education in the high schools. Thank you Anthony for all you do.

  21. I took the advanced classes too. Didn’t attend a trade school in HS but decided a different path after graduation.
We have had to “fight” to keep or get an advanced path students in out shop classes. The ago old “you’re too smart for trade school” mentality.
I guess counselors can’t grasp the fact a student can do both a technical field and still go on to college if they choose. Our near by jr. college is recruiting my next year 10th graders. (Future first year students). I have 100% credentialed students. The college isn’t even close with 1/4 the number of students.

    Anyway.
We spent Friday at Barbers Race Course. The sound of Indy cars was awesome. Lots of schools and businesses were set up there recruiting. A young person with a good work ethic can do just about anything they want today.

  23. My Mom wanted me to go to a four year college and get a bachelors degree in something. My Dad (retired Union carpenter) was able to “cool her down” and I went to Ranken Technical College in St.Louis and graduated in the top of my class. This delighted my Grandad who was a high school shop teacher in the 1950’s and 60’s (Mom’s Dad). I have a few people to thank for my success, but like you said, I have to thank my Dad and Grandad for giving me my work ethic and teaching me how to work. You are right about having to fight for advanced students, my guidance counselor was none too happy about me taking shop classes and going to Ranken.

Ewe...Did you kiss that Honey Bun that was in your hands and it had mystical powers far beyond your average croissant...

By the way that is quite the operation going on there...so are you saying you might go back to working there in the not to distant future...or would that only be due to a catastrophic school restructuring?

  25. I turned down a dream job offer as an instructor for a manufacturer. Had another manufacturer offer that I cut short during the interview process once I was asked about relocating to the other side of the country. Wasn’t interested in uprooting the kids as they finished HS.
But our school is 50+ years old. It’s been on the chopping block (rumors) for over a decade.
We lost 3 programs a couple years ago. One was a very robust diesel program. The system cited that diesel, IT and aviation wasn’t a “high wage, high demand occupation”

Cheetah has always been a dream car for me. Big fan of Bill Thomas as well, he did some very cool backdoor GM stuff. Thanks for posting. That car does not have an A pillar, like the originals, most repro bodies do. Is that an original car, if so, even more amazing.

  27. It’s a repro.
At first when I posted pic I thought original. Didn’t have time during our tour to really look at it. And once we spotted the Bugatti I was headed toward it.
The Chetah was on display yesterday at the Indy event.
Didn’t take long to see it’s a repro. But the sound is still amazing.
I’m slightly saddened. But the others there were real.
But it was parked near an F1. That helped ease the suffering.

I've said it before but I think what you do for these young people is awesome. You mentioned on a thread a week or so ago that you would like to pick up an air brush for the class. I bought this Badger 150 a long while back and never ever used it. I was going to teach myself but I haven't the time. Anyway, it's yours. PM me an address and I will send it to you and the students. Keep doing that voodoo that you do so well.
