Any one have a tech on this? Exactly how to make flames look like these? Any tips and suggestions??? thanks steve
Ahh, a Mike Lavalee flame job. Get an airbrush and some paint and for the next 2 weeks straight don't do anything but paint the car.
Mike Lavalee started out developing that style by studying photos of bonfires. http://www.killerpaint.com/ A few simple templates create the hard edges, colors are layered to create the effect.
Yea, thats where i got the shot of the truck.. Found it on killer paint... Have a tiny air brush, what setting should i star off with? Heavy then to light misting or what?? Templates to make sharp flames??
That is probably the second toughest style of airbrushing to execute well. Start with something simple, work your way up. It took Spike 20+ years to get to where he is now.
I took a class on how to do those flames. It's harder than he makes it look. First, you lay down Orange then candy red then back to orange then candy orange then yellow then back to candy orange then yellow/white then the secret color then candy purple and a little touch-up with some black then clear coat. Here's the man himself:
I've always LOVED how those looked... I want to get myself an airbrush bad and just paint and paint, along with the right kind of pinstriping brush. I can do it all on computers... but it's a whole different thing to do it for real on metal.
I just sent you an email about MSA. Thanx for posting info on that site. I have relatives in TORONTO an would like to visit you when I get up there. Am building a custom 51 merc. thanx jim
I really admire the talent it takes to properly execute that style of flames (Lavalee is awesome), and think they look pretty neat on the right car...BUT... That style of flames has no business anywhere near a traditional hot rod, custom, or bike. Not trying to be a wet blanket, just stating my opinion.
