I have a 9" out a 70's Torino. I jacked up both rear wheels to try to find out the gear ratio.

I spun the tire one revolution, and the yoke went around about 1 and 1/3 or 1/2 times. I've heard of high ratios, but that seems to indicate something like 1.5 to 1?????

Am I doing something wrong here, or is my top speed going to be something like 300 MPH? Thanks

  2. with one tire not moving anf the other spun one revolution...if your yoke goes around 1-1/2 times , that would be a 3.00 to 1 ratio

put the car on the ground and roll it until the wheel makes a full revolution, that way both wheels are tunring the same.

It may be too obvious, but have you checked the tag attached to the third member? Usually has the ratio on it. Unless the car has been modified or repaired with junkyard parts, chances are it has the original stuff. Most have the tag on them for no other reason than it takes an effort to remove it.....

Spud...If it's an OPEN rear ( not posi) ....HOLD one wheel still....rotate other wheel TWO turns and count driveshaft revs......that's it ! On a posi---turn either wheel ONE rev ( both wheels should turn in the same direction) and count ....

Thanks everybody. 3.00 would be almost perfect so I can drive on the interstate at less than 6000 rpm. I'll try the other suggestions

Depending on your tire OD, you'll be in the 2300 rpm range at 65-70 mph. i run 2:75 and it's 2200 rpm at 65 mph with 28" dia tires. but with 480 ci, it does not make to much difference on gas mpg, but it's fun anyway.
