Rear Axle Spacer

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by My 49, May 21, 2013.

  1. Looking for some views on the spacing between the differential spacer that is between the rear axles on my 49 Chevy Pickup

After removing both axles to install new seals and bearings, in re-installing the axles the manual says I should have maximum clearance of .014 between end of axle and spacer. I have about .035 which obviously is too much. I cannot find where to purchase a new differential spacer, so long story short, I am wondering can I rotate the original one 90 degrees and use the clean sides?

I have tried doing this and it goes in easy but now I have 0 clearance between axles shafts and spacer. The manual says maximum .014 space but doesn't have a minimum.

Will I have a problem with 0 space between them? Does there need to be a little space for side movement or is 0 fine?
